Israel Plans to Hit Iran Nuke Plant-Sunday Times

Sun Mar 13, 5:53 AM ET Top Stories - Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Israel has drawn up plans for a combined air and ground attack on Iranian nuclear installations if diplomacy fails to halt Tehran's atomic program, London's Sunday Times said.

The newspaper said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) and his inner cabinet had given "initial authorization" for a unilateral attack on Iran (news - web sites) at a private meeting last month.

U.S. officials have indicated they would not stand in Israel's way if international diplomatic efforts to halt Iran's nuclear projects fail, the paper said.

"If all efforts to persuade Iran to drop its plans to produce nuclear weapons should fail, the U.S. administration will authorize Israel to attack," the paper quoted an Israeli security source as saying.

Tehran, which has a stated goal of destroying the Jewish state, says its nuclear activities are aimed only at electricity generation but Washington and the European Union (news - web sites) suspect Iran could use its program to make atomic bombs.

Iran has frozen nuclear enrichment while it tries to reach a negotiated settlement on its nuclear program with Britain, France and Germany.

Washington on Friday joined the drive to put pressure on Iran by offering it a start to World Trade Organization (news - web sites) membership talks and access to civil aircraft and spare parts if it abandons its most sensitive nuclear activities.

The Sunday Times said Israeli tactics included raids by elite commando units and air strikes by F-15 jets using bunker busting bombs to penetrate underground facilities.

It said Israeli forces had been simulating attacks on a mock-up of Iran's Natanz uranium enrichment plant in the last few months.

Israel, which says Iran is very close to being able to make a nuclear bomb, played down the report.

Asked if there was a possibility that Israel could attack Iranian nuclear installations, Vice Premier Shimon Peres said: "I don't think so."

Israel is believed to be the only country in the region with nuclear weapons, though it has not confirmed or denied their existence.

Israeli warplanes bombed Iraq (news - web sites)'s Osirak nuclear reactor in a daring raid in 1981 to prevent it from making atomic bombs.

Tehran says it is prepared to confront any threats and that it would protect its nuclear sites.

"We will defend our nuclear sites with all our strength and we are ready to ward off any possible aggression," Iranian Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani told the semi-official INSA students news agency on Saturday.

Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) said in January that there was concern Israel might attack Iran if it "became convinced the Iranians had significant nuclear capability."

I agree that this is huge, but not for the same reasons as you. This will not trigger a World War. In my view, in order to have a "World War," you have to have a conglomeration of countries involved and you have to have Iran retaliate. No one will fight with Iran against Israel and the U.S., and I don't think too many countries will join Israel and the U.S. in a war against Iran. Best case scenario, we'll have another coalition like we have in Iraq.
The way I see it, when Israel attacked Iraq's nuclear facilities in 1981, the Muslim world was more united and a lot stronger relatively speaking (that's why Kissinger frantically engineered a peace deal between Begin and Sadat two years earlier) and no one did anything.

In my view, the situation becomes huge under 2 scenarios:

    1) If Pakistan makes good on its threat of not tolerating an Israeli attack on Iran. We know Pakistan is a nuclear power and we know Israel is a nuclear power. That could lead to a huge mess. However, I just don't see it happening. If Pakistan reiterates its threat to do it, I wouldn't be surprised if some "accident" happens and Pakistan's nuclear facilities get destroyed.

    2) If Israel attack Iran's nuclear facilities, I think suicide bombings, insurgencies, and acts of terrorism will grow like crazy. If that happens (and I think that is a very real possibility), then I think it will be something very huge and deadly.

With all of that, sometimes I wonder who gave Israel such power and authority to take it upon themselves to attack and destroy the nuclear facilities of another sovereign country. I wonder what would happen if some other country in the world attacks Israel's nuclear facilities. I want to see the world's reaction. We all know no one will do anything if Iran's facilities are destroyed because it is Iran. I wonder if the same principle will hold true with Israel.

I call BS, Iran's nuke program isn't going to be wiped out in a single or even a series of precision strikes.

To effectively eliminate the Nukes and the facilities, you need troops/special forces on the ground and likely lots of them

    I don't see it...

Say what you want....if Iran keeps up their arrogance and belief they can do what they want to do in the face of international obligations and in spite of the interational community, then their going to get pounced on. I honestly believe this is leading down the road to another war.

They have one of the most advanced armies in the world courtesy of the USA. War today is not size, but technology.

They have US F-18's, US Apache Helicopters and and pretty much given all of this stuff for free by the US and its tax payers.

Ironically, Iran stated last year it would sign an agreement that stated the Middle East would be 100% nuclear weapon free if Isreal would sign it. Israel refused and because of that we might have to clean up their mess.

You could say the same thing for Israel. Why can they have a stockpile of Nuclear weapons and Iran can't? Isreal has threatened Iran numerous times and this could be Iran's plight to protect itself with the threat of nuclear weapons.

As I stated in my last post, Iran proposed a 100% nuclear free middle east, but Isreal refused.

I would rather not respond to that with obvious answers and waste my time along with your time. Let's just say I don't see it in "black and white" like you apparently do and leave it at that. I don't think the "you have nukes so we should have nukes" argument is valid. I'm sure every Arab country would love to have nukes but the first Arab country to have nukes, Pakistan, has shown to us all why Arab countries should not have nukes. Obviously, Iran being the declared arch enemy that they are and how that country's government operates in supporting terrorism...I don't think you will find any West supporters who are going to be okay with Iran having nukes. In fact, I think their going to do everything in their power to prevent that reality from happening.

I don't believe that Pakistan is an Arab country. Also under that rational I could say Israel has shown us why non Arab nations shouldn't be allowed to have a strong military backed by a super power.

I agree that Iran shouldn't have nukes. I would be ok with the entire middle east including Israel not having nukes. It is interesting to note that France was largely responsible for Israel having nukes, and that Russia is heavily involved in the negotiations of supply Iran with nuclear power so they don't have their own nuclear facilities.

My bad...I meant Muslim country. I sometimes tend to confuse Pakistan as Arab. You can thank Bin Laden for that since he hangs out there with his henchmen.

I honestly don't have all the answers nor does anyone else. And, we don't know how this is going to play out. If Iran doesn't want to bend to the international community's will, then that won't be a good sign for things to come going forward.

I'm sure the Arab street will consider us impartial while they watch our hardware wipe out some Persian buildings. Bush the Liberator can take credit for that too.

oh by the way iran isn't arab either, genius.

and as far as 'muslim' countries go i fail to see why much of that is relevant. throughout the cold war pakistan iraq/iran (pre 80s) turkey were firmly on america's side.

muslim countries dont have any alliance that matters. sure the arab street might be happy that pakistan has nukes and vice versa but all that doesn't translate into actual governmental decisions.

I really doubt Pakistan would come to Iran's aid. Nevertheless, Iran is no pushover themselves. A self-sustaining country of 70 million with vast oil revenue and is not going to fall over and beg for forgiveness if attacked by Israel. As AggieRocket mentioned, I would expect an intifada of endless bombings to follow.

I would love for you to elaborate why Pakistan has shown us that Muslim countries should not have nukes. Quite frankly, I see it as quite the opposite. I think Pakistan shows us that a Muslim country can possess nuclear weapons responsibly. Before Pakistan got the weapon, every critic said that Pakistan's unstable and constantly shifting government would use the weapon on a whim. Every critic said that Pakistan would get the weapon one day and nuke India and Israel the next. As we all see, Pakistan has had the weapon for years now and the Pakistani government has handled it with the utmost responsibility. Pakistan could have easily attempted to nuke Israel unprovoked, but they have not. They have had conflicts with India since then, but never has nuking India even been mentioned. At least on the surface, Pakistan has been an ally in the War on Terror. As far as I am concerned, Pakistan is a model nuclear power.

Have you not been following the nuclear technology black market by Khan(father of the atomic bomb) in Pakistan? Is that what you call a country that has met their obligations and responsiblities as a model nuclear power? I don't think you can look past that proliferation going on for years. Even today...more news is coming out that the network is still going on. They had glaring holes in how they handled their security pertaining to nuclear secrets. I know the US has since consulted with Pakistan about how to secure their nukes but I'm not going to overlook what Khan got away with over the years. You may be talking about using the nukes but I'm talking about the whole nuke issue...including the equipment and processes involved in making the bombs which Khan was selling. Plus, we know he sold centrifuges and no telling what else to Iran who denied over a two decade period they were doing any nuclear experimentation...which they were up until they were found out a few years back.

I personally think that Muslim countries are a concern with regards to nuclear technology. Each of these countries has extremist elements rooted from Islam who conspire and engage in terrorist activity. These are the kinds of people one would worry about making a contact with some Iranian or fellow Muslim who is involved in the nuclear technology, the bomb making process, etc. for that country. This is exactly the same thing as worrying about what Khan was doing in Pakistan. From what I've seen and with the terrorist element around, anything can go in some of these countries. I think the Palestinian issue ways on my mind a lot in that there are militant factions involved in the government and Hezbollah, with their militant faction, is involved in their cause while also being supported by Iran. Their willingness to just blow themselves up is akin to saying anything goes with them. So, if your asking me if the Muslim countries can be as responsible as the Western countries in having nukes or nuclear technology, then my answer is no...not from what I've seen so far from Pakistan, Iraq, and Iran. That doesn't mean they cannot be...it just means I'm not putting my trust or future in their ability to secure their nuclear technology if I can help it. I think the president agrees that letting Iran covertly develop nukes under the guise of a civilian program is unacceptable to us. I think if the Iranians are willing to compromise and provide the guarantees necessary...then maybe something can be worked out.

As far as my referring to Middle Eastern country inhabitants as "Arabs"...I understand they have many ethnic backgrounds over there in each country. After 9/11, the term "Arab" is part of the American conscience when you think of Islam or the Middle East. At least, to some of us. I meant to be referring to those in that region...the Middle East. So, excuse my podunk use of the term "Arab". It doesn't mean I watch NASCAR and it doesn't mean I'm oblivious to the many ethnicities that exist in the region.

I'm not saying I'm right on all this. I'm just debating with you'll. I'm open to the debate and open to new ways of thinking about the situation. Whatever. Don't be hatin! :)

Surfguy... i don't understand your argument???...just to say no from what you have given shows some kind of bias against Muslims….

I don’t think you know enough about them to be making judgements…showing off your geography skillz don’t help:p

saying a country is Muslim therefore they should not have nukes is kinda screwed …no??
