i frequent another message board and one of the topics that popped up was whether an advertisement for intel processors was racist.

i seemed to be in the minority thinking that while not with the malicious intent of being racist, the ad was certainly distasteful and could be found offensive.

i didn't think this was d&d worthy since i just wanted y'all's opinions, but if it heads there oh well. here's the pic:

EDIT: i don't mean offensive TO YOU but offensive to blacks...either with the track athletes (implying all blacks and ONLY blacks run fast and are powerful), the standing white man vs. "bowing" blacks, or whatever you might see.

I wouldn't have noticed it until you said something, but I am white. Once you mention it, the imagery is there: it looks like a bunch of black men bowing down to a white man.

I think the ad oddly and unintentionally raises racial questions. I don't think it's offensive, but I think it is a very interesting oddity, almost like a racial Freudian slip.

I don't think it is offensive. The black men aren't bowing, they are in a sprinter's stance implying speed.

I'm sure this wasn't designed to be racist at all, but the imagery is so stark that I wouldn't be surprised if someone was offended by it. I could definitely see their point.

I can see how it would be offensive to black people.

As an ad, it's just stupid...offensive or not.

I thought it was funny that it's so blatantly racist (I'm sure on accident). I wonder if those guys in the picture thought the same thing. Would it hurt to mix in some other races? There are fast crackers out there.

I have a little pet peeve.

Here's a game for you to play....watch a few commercials that are vaguely comedic and contain a mix of races. If you find one where the white guy is not playing the bafoon or least informed or least intelligent of the group, you win.

    Hmmm...this is interesting.

The ad is attempting to show how fast intel processors are. Which of the following possible scenarios would personally impact you the most and portray the concept of speed? (assume that the pics of the track athlete are all of the same person, i.e. no mixing races)

    1. White manager standing - Black track athlete (original ad)

    2. White manager standing - White track athlete

    3. Black manager standing - Black track athlete

    4. Black manager standing - White track athlete.

    Another scenario:

You are a captain for a new basketball/track/baseball/football team. You are given a pool of players. You know NOTHING about the players. Absolutely no background information.

Lets just say it is a basketball team. The pool of players include 5 white guys (1 pg, 1 sg, 1 sf, 1 pf, 1 c) and 5 black guys (again 1 pg....).

The white and black player for each position are built exactly the same. Same height, weight, muscles...The only difference between them is skin color. Again, you know nothing more about the players than what they look like. You can't put them through drills or anything.

Who would your #1 pick be?

I don't think it's meant to be offensive but I can see how it can come off as such. Think it could have been avoided if they just mixed up the races of the people in the runners stance and not have them all be black

well come on. If they had a white sprinter...how many would make a funny cmment about "that aint maximizing power" :D

what color are the fastest sprinters in the world, typically? exactly.

    No, it's not offensive.

People read way too much BS into this kind of stuff IMHO. All this hypersensitive nonsense makes me want to puke.

If you're constantly looking for it to be true, you can find it in anything.

What does skin tone have to do with speed? Just ask Jeremy Wariner, that question.

    Who says they're black?

Most swimmers shave their head and have tans.
