His Lakers team has only one star available now, and they are not doing very well. Phil's team almost always have THE BEST player in the league... and more often than not... the top two players in the league.. (Jordan & Pippen, Shaq & Kobe, etc.) He left chicago when Michael re-retired. And he came to the Lakers when Kobe was emerging to be a superstar, with Shaq already well established. Honestly, he never coached, not even bad.. but a mediocre team. Most people chose him as the best coach because of his record.. but do you think he is overrated?
Its been a long debate about Phil. Some say he can't win unless he is on a team with a couple of top notch players and the way it is looking im starting to believe it. First Jordan (the greatest) and Pippen (hall of famer) then he left Chicago for LA which has one of the best big men of all time and one of the best all around guards in the game (Bryant). Until he wins with a team without a top notch player the debate will always be there.
Chicago had Jordan and Pippen before Jackson was the coach; they didnt win. LA had Shaq and Kobe before Jackson took over; they didn't win either. Without Jackson the Lakers would have lost to Portalnd in 2000 and to Sac in 2002. Some coaches are better at teaching than Jackson, but no one is better at pushing a team over the top.
Jackson's team has gone from the LA Lakers to the LA Paytons. You don't seriously expect Phil to win with his current lineup, do you? The Lakers aren't a deep team. They are proving that right now.
Couldn't that just mean that the coaches those teams had pre-Jackson (Collins and Rambis I think) were not good?
oops, you accidentally wrote "jackson" instead of "refs." common mistake since they always seem to go hand in hand. of course jackson's overrated. he may be good and a good manipulator, but the fact that the team with the best player pretty much always wins and jackson always seems to have that guy, it's not a surprise he wins titles. jackson didn't come until kobe's 4th year, and the 4th year seems to be when most high school guys have gone from good to great, and kobe was no exception. not many people don't win the title with 2 top 5 players.
When Jackson took over. . . . The Bulls were in the Eastern Conference Championships No one is saying he isn't a GOOD coach but great??? Best of all time???? I don't think so . . . . Phil cannot take a C+ Team to an A Team but he can take an A team to a A+ Team Rocket River
depends on how you define A team or C team. having all the pieces doesn't automatically gives you an A team (like the lakers before Phil) but winning games does.
he's a good coach he's overrated in the sense that people believe coaches can come in and make a bad team a good one. some coaches are better fits in certain places rather than others...but other than Bill Parcells, I have never in my lifetime seen a coach have a demonstrable effect...I've never seen a coach make a bad team win a championship. Ultimately, it comes down to the talent he has to work with. Phil, very conveniently, has partnered with some of the greatest player who have ever played the game. And he has 6 rings to show for it.
Classic Of course Jackson is overrated. He is so privileged to coach 2 teams in a row with at least 2 superstars. Yes, he has done a great job in terms of coordination and more importantly, influencing the refs. But that's it.
Is Jackson a good coach? Yes, in the sense that he knows how to use talents. Is Jackson a great coach? Debatable. Is Jackson one of the greatest coaches ever? No. The ring-couters usually rate him as one of the greatest coaches. That's overrating.
Red Aeurbach had as many as 8 hall of famers on his team at one time...If anybody is overrated, it's him... He's had Jordan, Shaq, and Kobe, and he's managed to win 9 titles. Now, if he only had one or two titles with all that talent, THEN you can start trashing him, but to discount his coaching abilities because he's never had to coach a team with scrubs is simply obsurd and smacks of jealousy. Jordan said he would retired if Phil didn't come back with the bulls, and he did. Shaq said that the only way he would play on the Olympics is if Jackson were coaching. Does that sound like "overrated" to you? Name me any coach in the league that could get to the playoffs with a starting lineup of Gary Payton, Kareem Rush, Devean George, Luke Walton, and Slava Medvedenko "overrated is officially my most hated word in the English language
i think there's a very distinct difference between trashing someone and saying they're overrated. you don't have to be the greatest coach in the history of the world to be worthy of acclaim. phil is clearly a good coach. is he the source of all 9 of the rings he wears??...no, despite what some would have you believe...those people have OVERRATED him.
Hm. There's a big difference between making good moves to field a dynasty and going where the best players are. A BIG difference.
