My uncle gave me his old iPod, but I can't connect it to my PC. It has this little adapter that you connect to the firewire that allowed him to connect it to his sony laptop. My computer doesn't have one of these connections. I've been looking online for something I can use to connect it to my USB ports, but the only thing they have requires you to have the iPod connected to a dock, which I don't have. Any help is appreciated.
Go here, and you should see the USB cable on the second row on the grid. (Even though its called a "dock" connector, there is no dock required... the cable connects directly to the iPod).
Thanks, but I don't think that's gonna work. The one I have is a 2nd gen iPod and it doesn't have a port that can connect to the other end of that wire. I looked at a 3D quicktime VR on the apple site of the current iPod and I can see right at the bottom where that wire is supposed to connect. http://www.buyessex.com/ebay/images/IMAP_Stock/ETG_-20409_08_05_04_02_01_14.JPG
If you're semi-computer-proficient and have a spare PCI slot, I'd just buy a FireWire (aka IEEE 1394) card. Fry's has one for $15; Newegg will get you the same one for $9; Froogle turned up one for $4. I had a similar problem with my 5GB iPod that I handed down to my sister; I think I just went to CompUSA and paid like $20 for a card. If you also have a laptop, you can get a PC Card (PCMCIA) FireWire card. It's probably a little more expensive. Plus, you'll probably need that little adapter. I'm fairly sure it's impossible to use USB on a first-gen iPod. Sorry.
^like the poster above said (kimble14), just get yourself a firewire card. its cheap and relatively easy to install in your computer.
I didn't know what I was doing and I installed the firewire card to. It can be done fairly easily and is well worth it. You will see a big difference. But keep in mind not all the firewire cards work that well so investigate the best firewire cards that work for ipod. And if the first one don't work, just buy a different one and try it.
