I'm getting my daughter a nano for her birthday (already bought it) and I had a question about setting up her iTunes library.

The iTunes that is on my computer has my library as its default. I have a 60 gig, so this is like over 9,000 songs. Exactly how would it work for me to set up her library which is going to have less than 1,000 songs on that same computer? I'm assuming you can do it but I am not sure.

Assuming you can do it, is it a simple matter of opening iTunes and then plugging her iPod into my computer? Which then recognizes that her iTune is different from mine and the library will show up with nothing in it? Has anyone done this before - set up a new iTunes library on a computer that already has an existing library? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Your libraries will be the same but the music in the iPod will be different. When you plug in the iPod you'll have to set it up with her name, get the updates, etc etc, but when all of that is done you'll see nothing in her library and at that point you can drag and drop what you want in to her iPod.

I ran into the same problem. I have an 80GB and my kids and my wife each have 30GBs. What we had to do is sort the music by genres, and each person would deselect the music genre in Itunes that they didn’t want. We have a total of 42 different genres Alternative, Blues, 70’s Rock, Jazz, etc.. So if no one is likes Pop they could deselect it in Itunes. That way they don’t have to have the 500 Pop songs on their Ipod.

Once you plug in her iPod, the iTunes screen will show what's in her ipod.

Just click your COMPUTER's library from the side menu on iTunes. This will display the songs on your COMPUTER that are available for transfer.

Then, you can click and drag the songs from the iTunes screen to your daughter's ipod. (Like dragging one file to another folder in Windows)

Another helpful tip is to make sure "MANUAL UPDATE your iPod" is on so that it doesn't automatically change what's in your ipod to what's in your computer. This way you won't have to keep tranferring the same songs that you already have on your ipod.
