My high school graduation is Friday....I'm expecting to get about 500 bucks in graduation presents. With that 500 bucks, I've been thinking, no brainer, that I want to buy a computer for college, for me to write essays, and just for my own use. Nothing special. I'm just thinking I want to buy the best homke desktop computer I can get for about 500 bucks to use for essays, AIM, Internet, and maybe put a game or two on it. The only thing that is uncertain is that if I buy the computer, I'll have to wait for my parents to get the router and everything installed so that I can have internet access. My parents are lazy, too, so I may eventually end up having to pay and do that myself. I began thinking though, and I've wanted an Ipod for the longest time. Just to listen to, especially in my car. I think the idea is a brilliant one. So now, I am pondering buying an Ipod (200 bucks or so) and using it for the car and other things, and then pocketing the rest, to save up with a paycheck or two for a computer. I think this idea is appealing as well. Even if I did that, I don't think the family computer usage for an extra month or two would kill me. Which would you go for?
honestly, you can buy both with $500 $200 for the Mini Ipod and a decent comptuer for $300 more or less. Dunno if you are in Houston, but at NeoBox, you can get a PC w/ monitor for $379. http://www.neobox.ws/379.pdf EDIT: n/m i see that your in NY, either way, im sure you can find a computer shop that will have a decent computer for around $300 or so.
I say based on that sentence, get the Ipod. A month or two will go by in no time. ....and congratulations!!
I'd buy 500 McChickens, then make a fort out of them that only me and the girl from the Mercury Montego commercial would be allowed in.
To me, computer is more important for college, but then again I'm a CS major. Do you really need an IPod? There are planty of cheap alternative mp3 players out there that might fill your needs. Then you can use the rest of money on a good computer.
Dude, get a good computer. The absolute last thing you want is feeling like you need to replace it halfway through college. I'd go with a laptop (sucks moving a desktop+monitor into a dorm room/apartment compared to a laptop, plus what if you have annoying roomies you need to get away from?), but then again, desktops are cheaper...
Both, find an old monitor that someone will give you or sell you cheap and build your own computer and buy a Mini.. I think after Tax and shipping it would be about 50+ more than you want to spend, but you could get both and not out grow the PC untill after college if you dont play videogames on it..
If you basically just want the computer for word processor and internet, save your money and use the ones that will be available in the school's computer lab. Unless you're really disciplined with time management or you have a fluff schedule, I wouldn't reccomend having a potential distraction like that in your room.
I just got a postcard for a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop for $499 (after rebate). 1.3 Ghz 14" display 256 DDR SDRAM 30 GB HDD CDR/DVD drive FYI
If you don't have a Chase bank account, you can get an IPOD for free. just direct deposit $500 and make 2 online payments by the end of August. you have to make the account by June 30th i believe.
Dude I KNOW. That chick is smokin! Edit: Her name is Jill Wagner. Check out pics of her from Stuff magazine here. You're Welcome.

I don't think a $500 computer would cut it for very long, but then again I haven't checked to see how low the prices have dropped. If you're gonna get a computer, do it big. With that said, go the route I did and get a U2 special edition iPod. Coolest purchase I ever made - slightly ahead of the complete recordings box set of Led Zeppelin.
Dell had a special last weekend for a p4 3ghz, 19" lcd, and printer for $499. You can get a pretty decent computer for $500.
