I need to get my battery replaced and I know this falls under my warranty. However, I jailbroke the phone with Cydia. Do I need to take this off before taking it in to get a new battery? Restoring the phone to original conditions will delete all media....
He can back up his bought and downloaded apps from the App Store, along with notes, contacts, music, videos, etc. He just cannot back up any jailbroken apps/features.
Yeah, but if you have a bunch of jailbroken apps, or apps from Cydia, you'll have to re-download them all. There is something called pkgbackup which backs up the names of all the jailbroken apps... but I've used it before and it doesn't work that well. You can surely do it, it's just a pain in the ass to get each app back one by one. Photos also, yes. All you do is back it up. When you're syncing your phone to iTunes, it usually backs it up first then syncs. Once it's backed up, it should save all that stuff. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Thanks. I'll try that then take it in. When I restore the backup, will it go back to version 4.1 or will it make me upgrade to 4.2?
Try CopyTrans Control Center. It's a good alternative to itunes. Be aware, though, that after I've used it on my three iphones, I was unable to sync via itunes. You'll absolutely have to restore when you're done.
AppSync in cydia. (will sync ALL apps even jailbroken apps with itunes). also pay 4 bux or watever for DiskAid. it'll allow you to see all the files on ur phone and drag/drop on/off your phone as you please. also if u paid for mywi, my3g etc. cydia keeps it on record. you just need to link ur purchases with facebook or smthg. also if u have a 3GS dont forget to save ur SSH or watever to re-jailbreak later. i jumpedfrom 3G to iphone4 so im stuck on a tethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 but it only sucks if i want to power down my phone.
I backed the phone up but when I tried to restore the original settings it asked me to download version 4.2 to complete the restore. However, it wouldn't allow me to download version 4.2. I got an error saying it timed out and to check the network settings. What did I mess up?
OK, there's few ways of approaching this. You can either restore it back to whichever firmware you currently have on your phone (which is tricky but doable if you want to) or upgrade and then restore which iTunes is asking you to do. Either way you do it, you'll have to get rid of that error message. I can't really help unless I know what the error message is though. I would advise that you check if you have the latest version of iTunes and that no firewalls are blocking iTunes. If you ever messed with the hosts file, that could also be it. Check this article out and see if you can match the error number you're getting with the ones on this page. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275 If you want to try the tricky method of restoring your iPhone to your current firmware that's on your phone right now, you can do so but you have to make sure you backed up your SHSH through Cydia. It's pretty easy.. just takes a tap. Spoiler Read this, and it tells you how to back up your SHSH on Cydia if you haven't already. http://theiphonenerd.com/tips-and-tricks/save-shsh If you have backed it up, Cydia should show something like this on the top: Once that's been done, you have to download something called tinyumbrella. Windows: http://cache.firmwareumbrella.com/downloads/tinyumbrella-4.21.07.exe Mac: http://cache.firmwareumbrella.com/downloads/TinyUmbrella-v4.21.07.pkg Once you've downloaded it, you connect your iPhone to your computer and then run Tiny Umbrella. After that, just click "Save my SHSH" and let it run. Once it's done, you can restore back to your current firmware. You should already have a current version of your firmware on your computer (location for windows: Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates | location for mac: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates) but if for some reason you don't you can get it at this site... http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ Just make sure you get it for the right iPhone model. Once you know where your firmware is, go into itunes, and then if you're on windows hold the "shift" key (if you're on mac hold the "alt" key) and click restore at the same time. A window will pop up asking you to open an ipsw (software update file) and you just point it to the file. It'll restore it back and you should be good to go.
can u tell me what the error was exactly? i think i got it before. i had to open terminal and change some string. it looked scary but was actually not that hard. was it this?? http://en.kioskea.net/faq/10927-solution-for-error-1015-after-jailbreak-4-2-1-ios
Serious question - Is the main reason to jailbreak the iPhone to get service from someone other than AT&T or are there other compelling reasons?
You can get custom lock screens and download apps/games for free. Also, I hope you didn't just do a system restore through itunes bc the modem software will update and you won't be able to jailbreak it. It'll make a difference bc you won't be able to sell it for a high amount when the 5 comes out since tmobile customers can't just buy an iPhone and unlock it right now..assuming a new jailbreak doesn't come out soon for the updated modem software..
Games like Madden 11, NBA Live 11, & Spiderman, which go for $9.99 in the app store. You can get all sorts of games. I think Street Fighter IV is made specifically for iPhone..it's one of my favorite games. Any app you can get through the App store is usually available through Cydia/Installous. SBSettings is another thing that I really like. You can see how that works here - Spoiler <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TGuk3aOsRuw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Also, you can still go through the App store for free apps.
I know it is legally O.K. to jailbreak an iPhone, but is it legally O.K. to get those games for no cost?
