I have Roadrunner internet had have for several years. I'm running into connection problems to websites where it says:

"www.yahoo.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again."

I'm getting this problem on several popular sites including Clutchfans.net, the bbs, yahoo, google and many more! I'm having the same problem on both my browsers - IE & FoxFire.

I've rebooted my modem but the problem persist.

    Any ideas???

So you can get to some websites but not others?

If so, sounds like some type of spyware to me.

Spyware was my first thought too. I just ran Ad-aware full system scan yesterday but I've had this problem for weeks and it is getting worse.

It is very intermittent. Like I can try over and over and some never come up but clutchfans.net comes up after several trys.

So it always references "www.yahoo.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again" no matter what sight you go to? (i.e. it always says "yahoo")

No it gives the proper site each time. Took me about 40 trys to get back into clutchfans.net after my reboot. I've now run Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D. Still no luck.

    This is very fustrating.

You've used all the anti-spyware stuff, right?

One thing to note is to make sure your DNS settings are correct in the network properties. Sometimes, spyware can change your DNS to be looking at some rogue DNS server that doesn't supply things properly.

Also, you might want to clear your DNS cache.
Go to Start->Run->type cmd and hit enter
then, in the command prompt, type:
    ipconfig /flushdns

    See how things work then.

Thanks Vengence. Did that. No effect. It seems to be getting worse. I first noticed this like 2-3 weeks ago but I could always get through on the second attempt. Now like 80% of my clicks don't work. Some sites work all/most of the time, some never. Got really bad yesterday.

Now thinking of wiping the hard drive and starting over.

before you wipe it out....have you tried to clear all your cached content?

do you have a firewall functioning?(specifically, the Windows firewall)

    try deleting your internet cache...

Call Time Warner and have a technician come out. You're probably getting a ton of packetloss for some reason. He can adjust whatever it is they adjust or maybe see if your modem is bad. Btw, what model modem do you have?

Make sure yahoo and clutchfans etc. are not listed in your hosts file.
Go c: -> windows -> system32 -> drivers -> etc and open the file called hosts with notepad or wordpad, and if legitimate sites are listed in there (like yahoo), delete the line that lists them and then save the modified hosts file.

Already cleared the cache. thanks though. I don't think I have MS firewall. I have a router that has a firewall.

    Will call Time Warner tonight.

Do you mind me asking what part of town you're in? I live over near Montrose/downtown, and I've been having similar issues with TW... some websites work... others don't pull up at all... and it just started a few weeks ago.

I live near beltway 8 & I-10 out west. Sounds just like me. Are you using IE or FireFox? I have both and same problem on both. Firefox gives the Alert the site could not be found while IE takes you to the site but gives the "Page can not be displayed"

    Have you called TW?

I use both Firefox and IE... exactly the same problem. I called them a 2 weeks ago, and it coincided with an actual "known outage" in my area, so they told me to call back. I called back on Saturday, but I can't have anyone come by until this Friday because our box is behind a locked gate.

So they are familiar with the problem?
