i don't get too caught up in the daily ups and downs of the various daily tracking polls- they're interesting, but it's the longer term trends that are more important.

I'm a premium subscriber to Rasmussen however, and it's the internals that are particularly fascinating. Overall, they show the race as essentially tied (on a national level). Most of the volatility of late has been with McCain's numbers, and Obama now stands at roughly where he was before the start of the democratic convention. and the number of voters who are "committed" to one candidate (not leaners, not likely, etc., but who won't change their minds), is about 40% for each. McCain has been up and down, but obama's number has stayed the same.

even more fascinating is that there are still about 14% of voters who are completely undecided (again, not leaning one way or another). some of these voters simply will not vote, but of those likely to, over 50% are democrats (not republicans or independents).

So, even after 20 months of campaigning, 100s of millions of dollars spent, the primaries, the world tour, the Oracle of the Ocropolis, and all the built in advantages of a democrat running in against an unpopular republican brand, while we're at war, and with the economy in turmoil...Obama still has not sealed the deal with his own party, much less with the country as a whole.

he may still win or course, and i would never predict one way or another (at least at this juncture), but there's a fundamental weakness in a candidate who has so many obvious advantages, and yet about whom so many doubts still persists.

So many posts persist because McCain supporters keep making posts about him rather than praising their own candidate.

The 14% are sheep. No seriously. That isn't really an insult it is just a fact that they are not as informed as the rest of the people that are paying attention. They are the very definition of ignorance. Since the Republican Smear machine has WAY more practice at LYING to the American Sheeple, this election will be closer than it really should be.

The only possible saving grace would be if the people that believe the crap coming out of the neocon lie factory act according to the classic greek origin of the word idiot: they simply do not participate on Nov. 4th. One can hope.

You can help. On Nov. 4th vote Obama and then go play X-Box or Mario Cart all day with your idiot friend who actually thinks Obama might be a Muslim. Do us all a favor and keep those fools OCCUPIED until 7 PM Central Time.

I would say McCain has been somewhat successful driving up Obama’s negatives with all the distortions and lies of his campaign ads. But we cannot deny that there are still elements in this country that no matter what, will refuse to vote for a black man. Sadly this is not a phenomenon of just one party. Hopefully right thinking Americans will overcome the baser instincts of our nation and rise up to a new and glorious future!

    NO FEAR!!!!

I think those of us here pay far more attention to politics than the "average American." What we might assume someone knew, could very well be information they haven't yet seen. John McCain has been part and parcel to Ameican politics for 25 years. He's been a regular on the talk show circuit, coming across very well, and on the Sunday news talk shows.

Barack Obama? People are still getting to know him and his policies. I think all the basic fundamentals for a Democratic/Obama victory are there. What Obama and the party need to do is go balls out during these last weeks, hammer McCain/Palin, Bush/Cheney, and the GOP Congess that spread their legs for Bush for 6 years, and take their message to the American people. Obama has to be consistantly passionate about the issues. He can't be falling back into university lecture mode. Joe Biden has been terrific and needs to do more. The Clintons should be out there stumping for the ticket in swing states. They need to spend all that money the Obama campaign is supposed to be generating.

I'm looking forward to a solid Democratic win.

the best thing I heard on polls was on hardball yesterday. obama leads substantially with people under 45, mccain leads substantially with people over 45.

i expect when some of these old coots get their third quarter 401K statements, some gaps will be closed. the number was in the 15% range both ways I believe.

you could replace the words "McCain" with "Obama", and "black man" with "woman" and your pst would be equally accurate.

LMFAO - only an off-message buffoon like bassmaster would tout Phyllis Schafly's inbred country cousin as a paragon of women's rights.
