I'm for usage taxes but some of these problems are so broad based I'm not sure usage taxes are going to work to meet funding or be too burdensome. I still think our debt will be problematic but spending on infrastructure is one of the best uses of debt for ROI.
Yea.... infrastructure is not one those things that's going to go away.... It's essentially normal maintenance that we keep putting off.
It's an expensive, expensive undertaking, and the only reason folk move here is to avoid paying taxes for this kind of stuff. The hope is dig deeper bayou's and pray for the best
The irony is it doesn't have the be taxed via the mass - ie, gas, essentials etc. If you just cut down loopholes of corps and uber wealthy (over $10 mil/a year) then it can be done..... but that means senior politicians like pelosi will have to sacrifice their lifestyle
god forbid we have a president that actually gets **** done instead of talking and doing nothing. Its so funny how Trump got stone walled by his own party in infrastructure. If trump could he would run as a democrat so he could spend as much as he wanted to. Trump was never a true Republican yet knew that was the only party that dumb enough followers to buy into his bs. The trump turds have no idea how to stop the Biden train coming. Fastest GDP growth in over 4 decades, historic low unemployment , booming bull market and the turds think culture war bs is going to save them LOL. Its fascinating as a moderate to see democrats actually governing while GQP spin more and more conspiracies.
I'm not talking about March of 2021. I am referring to the timeframe later; that this man, nor any other man or woman should be President of the most powerful country in the world when they are 85 years old after having had the most stressful job in the world for 7 years in their 70-80's. There are people that are in better shape at Biden's age and I don't think they should either. Hell, I think Trump was too old as well. 55-70 is old enough and should give you ample time to have the wisdom and experience to hold office. I'm not arguing this it is as it's my opinion.
I just watched a disturbing yet interesting interview about a generation of inflation due to the world being awash in debt. Things start to go crazy if it hits 4%, so it doesn't necessarily mean hyper inflation, just uncontrolled and unserviceable debt the government has to step in and control. Historically, the more indebted a country becomes, the less of a payoff on the return the debtor nation receives. You get a small bump in the first few months, then it recedes because you're also servicing interest. The exception to this is infrastructure, which generates real value instead of people saving it in banks or stocks. It's too bad we didn't get another legit infra bill after 08 because of petty spiteful politics, which is probably why Joe is striking fast and hard with round 2 and shifting collateral damage by the Trump corporate giveaway into "funding" this bill. We're still way under the hole from Trump's pre-covid 3T spending spree during what should've been an economic recovery + bull run on equities. This also reduces stimulus fatigue and subsequent astroturf outrage when he turns off the spigot from the last tax cut. So yes, taxes is an important issue, but I'm wondering what the remaining three years of Biden's term will focus on. Capitalism is really in danger of reconstructive surgery here and it might not be a nip and tuck facelift. It's going to be real interesting on how creative these taxes will be though my first guess will be harder enforcement of capital controls over anything major. Clamp down borders before you shake up the rich who profit massively on cheap credit and a fed that hammers out risk. Maybe that's when Uber wealthy come to bit Jesus and dump $$$ into non tracable NFTs. We've been pretty good at threading the needle so far, I guess. Anyone interested about the first bit should read interviews or papers by Lacie Hunt.
Whether he does or not I'm glad he is addressing a major problem with this country that desperately needs to be addressed. If this cost him his reelection so be it.
I am as well. I'm somewhat of a nerd when it comes to stuff like this and mass transit. I have been to countries and places like Denmark (beautiful Copenhagen train station) Singapore (beautiful airport and other infrastructure) Japan & Tokyo (their intricate train system is bonkers and amazing along the punctuality) I suppose I could be wrong but I don't see how Texas can continue growing like it is over the next 50+ years if something is not done about mass transit. I mean is Houston/Austin/San Antonio eventually just going to be connected and one large city with traffic the entire way? Keep spreading out etc I don't know.
Let me try to explain it to the reflexive anti-tax, anti-government spending folks. Say you have a car and never do maintenance to save money month by month, it will cost you more to have to by a new one a couple of years earlier. You should not think of money spent on maintenance as a pure loss.
I mean, a president from one party calling a senator from another party? To discuss a bill? What, is that now a thing? Of course, the turtle will simply oppose it regardless, but...
is the timing wrong for a giant infrastructure spending bill? "The Death of Density?" https://www.city-journal.org/covid-19-the-death-of-density excerpt: Covid-19 has made people wonder how much physical interaction is needed in a world defined by social distancing and elbow-bumps. Why operate your business from an expensive midtown office when all you need is a smartphone and laptop, a tasteful backdrop for your video calls, and Amazon Prime? Ask the same question on a societal level, and one begins to wonder why it’s necessary to pour billions into a staggeringly expensive system of urban infrastructure when all you need to keep the wheels of commerce turning is Zoom, Signal, and a reliable, super-fast wireless network. more at the link
He will be judged on his performance regardless of age. No one knows what will happen a few years down the road. His age is a genuine concern but the reality is that there are people in their 80's that have their complete mental faculties.
He could always pull a Trump and just be along for the ride, golf everyday, give slurred pep rally’s and have his cabinet members do everything for him.
