wtf does other forms of slavery have to do with the united states, and no one said it wouldn't be significant if a woman or native american would become pres or native american

you're making stupid ass arguments to ignore the significance of this, why are you hating?

Costly as in about $25 per barrel. It's more expensive than a lot of conventional oil, but they're still making truck fulls of money at $40 per barrel.

I know that this is going to sound ridiculously American-centric, but I firmly believe that the success of the American experiment led to the outlawing of slavery in Western countries. The United States were founded on the ideals of liberty and justice for all. These ideals didn't originate with Americans, but we were the first to establish a government based on them. And when we had some success, it empowered oppressed minorities everywhere. The first copycats were the underclasses in France. After that, enslaved minorities all over the West began to follow along. And they got support from people who believed in these ideals because they saw them work in the United States.

And that company would probably be Syncrude, or perhaps Suncor. I realize that your company does design work, but the economy in Ft. McMurray has been so overheated in recent years that I think it's been very hard to get these projects done, and that might be a secondary reason why some of these projects have been put on the shelf. Hopefully the lull will give the city a chance to catch up a bit and build more houses and other services.

If Wilbur Wright hadn't made the first manned flight maybe someone else might've sense at many people had been heavily pursuing the manned flight. Someone had to be first and whether another African American could've become president Obama was the first to do it and the first to break a barrier is always an achievement. Just ask the second guy to break the speed of sound.

Its pretty sad though that England abolished slavery long before we did. :(

And as a British colony so did Canada, and that of course led to the Underground Railroad. I thought it was great that Obama used the Lincoln Bible. I thought that that was very powerful symbolism. I believe traditionally the first trip to a foreign country an American president makes is to Canada, and Obama has already said that his first foreign trip will to Canada as well. Once slaves fled to Canada to seek their freedom. Now an African-American will come to Canada as the President of the United States ... where he will probably be greeted by Governor General Michaëlle Jean, a black, Hatian, immigrant, woman who is Canada’s head of state. Anything is possible in this new world we live in, so let’s get it together and make some good things happen!

    No joke.

There are MORE women in the USA then there are men yet they have never been a president. They got the right to vote LAST. A man (of any race) can hold any job in the military, a woman (of any race) cannot.

How many women senators are there? How many black? Same question for governors. When it comes to elective office at the highest levels, the difference in difficulty is not even close.

Both women and minorities remain at a disadvantage in most cases.

You are being the ass. I said that this would go down as history, but its significance is different based on the individual, but you keep ignoring that. What could American Indians & the selling of young girls didn't go on in America?

Does racism and prejudice still exist? Yes, but at an extremely low level. Prejudice and racism will always exist to a degree, just look through history. At the same time that prejudice works in every direction. I could ask a bunch of white people and they would piss and moan about how unfair it is that there are scholarships, and programs geared towards minorities only, so white people get screwed. People in general think somebody else has it better than them and like to put the blame on others.

My guess would be because of the financial/education disparity. Those are more expensive political races. The House is so much easier to get into because you only need the support of your community, rather than support across the state. Money certainly causes a major gap in our society.

Huh? You honestly believe it's "financial/education disparity"? The reason is that blacks have a very unique history in this country (nuff said, eh) and they are MUCH smaller in number than women. It isn't rocket science. Finances or education have little or nothing to do with it. IMO, if you turned the clock back 8 years and took a poll about whether a woman or black would be elected president first, it would have probably been 80% to 20% that a woman would be.

Another opinion: If George Bush weren't such a presidential catastrophic disaster, Hillary Clinton would be president right now. But the country was so off track that voters were pushed to go even further outside their comfort zone. If we had not invaded Iraq, Hillary (or less likely, McCain) would have been sworn in earlier today.

Agreed, but there were colonies that had outlawed slavery before Indepedence, and were some of the first in the world to do so. I know that they still had laws that enabled and helped Southern slavery continue, and oppressed African Americans in other ways, but that's where the abolition movement started.

Wow...can we not fight at this time? Just enjoy the moment people.

I'm coming back from DC tomorrow, but this experience was right up there with the Olympics. It was a very festive and PEACEFUL celebration, even though there were so many people and you had to wait forever to do anything.

    Great, GREAT day!!! :)

Ha, I bought one of those comic books too (Spidey - Obama edition). These dudes were selling all kinda stuff out here. The NY print shops have had a great January. The funniest hustle was these guys selling Obama spray, and they were yelling "Obama spray....you can smell like Obama"....or "Obama spray...I smell change". Hilarious!!!!!!!

and that's the significance, we can say that america has come far enough to have minorities and women as presidents, but until it actually happens, we can't appreciate it fully. when a woman becomes president, it will still be significant even though a minority proceeded.

Props to former President Bush for being so gracious to Obama during his inauguration. With the constant criticism by Obama during his campaign and inauguration speech he could have handled it different. I thought he handled his exit very classy.
