...to work. I got a job doing the network support for the medical clinics of half a dozen prisons. What can I expect? I've been to jail before, but for silly adolescent things. Nothing that required more than an overnight stay in a single cell. I've also done the IT work for police stations where jails are, but again, I never really had any contact with the prisoners. I don't think I'll be walking through general population, but you never know. I think it will be an interesting change of pace. Anyone ever worked in a prison before? What should I expect?
You probably won't see too many prisoners, but if you do, do not act scared. Eventually they will just become part of the scenery. But until then, if they sense fear you're only inviting trouble.
My wife clerked with a prominent defense attorney in law school and went on a few visits. Wash your hands as often as possible.
Very good point. I had a friend who worked at a prison here in Arkansas and said they don't pay enough money for what you do at a prison as a guard.

My sister actually works in the Dallas County Childrens Correctional Facility as a counselor. She interacts with the kiddie criminals daily but she has to "cross over" into the lockup facility to see them. Her offices, along with the IT folks, administrators, etc, are in a separate building.
