We would also be sending out our early 2nd round pick from to New Orleans in addition to Howard and Anderson.

The idea is we could catch New Orleans in disarray and hope they will panic with the recent news about Andersen being dismissed from the league and losing frontcourt depth. I'm sure they would love to see somebody offer to take Andersen off of their hands and have him be replaced by an adequete forward, but at what price?

That price would be their 20-year old, athletic guard J.R. Smith who remains a promising yet slowly developing piece to their puzzle.

I wont lie, if I was New Orleans I wouldn't do this deal. Trading away a talented, dynamic 20-year old player would rarely ever be considered wise especially when you have the emergence of a solid but unproven player in David West. But with their surprising record of playing near .500 ball and with West's injury history and little other frontcourt depth to begin with, is it worth it to roll the dice to get rid of a deadweight contract by taking on a proven veteran but losing part of your core?

Anderson could help offer them some assurance in the backcourt. Like I mentioned before, Smith's production has been down this season combined with the already decent collection of SG/SF's they already have (Desmond Mason, Rasual Butler, Kirk Snyder and hell, even Boki) perhaps somebody like Smith is expendable given the right circumstances?

Unlikely, I know. But fun to play around with none-the-less.

    Any thoughts/comments?

Andersen is not even in the league anymore, you can't trade him. Why did the hell would the hornets want two old slow players. Howard is solid but has a big contract that last till 2011 and they already have David West and PJ Brown. Why would they give up on JR Smtih? He is in the doghouse but still only 20 years old.

They have some pretty neat furniture, but it's all rather cheaply built from what I can tell.

A big reason for the Hornets success this season is because they have adapted the Phoenix Suns point-guard-led, uptempo style of play. Speedy Claxton and Chris Paul really push the ball up the court and they need athletes that can run with them.

Juwan Howard and Derek Anderson really don't fit that style of play. Stromile Swift, on the other hand, would probably fit in really well there, but trading him leaves us rather unathletic in the front court.

Why would they want Juwan when they already have PJ Brown.

Their PF-C rotation consists of two decent players: David West and P.J. Brown.

Outside of Brown and West they are extremely weak and have little depth. Brandon Bass, Jackson Vroman and Maciej Lampe all hardly even play. Those guys are all too young and/or undersized to play major minutes yet. Howard could at least provide some reliable, consistent play for an otherwise depleted front court.

Is there some kind of NBA-contract clause that immediately dissolves a player's contract if he were to get dismissed from the league the way Andersen has? Or is his contract still on the books and you could technically still trade it the way I am suggesting?

I think the Hornets still hold the rights to Chris Anderson. Is this suspension indefinite? I doubt it. The rights could be traded with NBA approval like any other trade. At some point in the future this guy should be eligible to play.

He was not banned for life like Michael Ray Richardson.

I do not know how much game the guy has if he is not amped up...

He can't even ask to be reinstated for another 2 years. I'm sure there is a clause in his contract that the team doesn't have to pay if he gets suspended by the league like that.

He is basically fired for 2 years i believe and has to ask to even be let back in the league before he can worry about his contract.

Well then, maybe we should wait until somebody who knows for sure can explain it before we dismiss the whole idea as not worthy of this site's bandwidth or conversation. :)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The New Orleans Hornets' emotions upon learning of Chris Andersen's dismissal from the NBA for violating the league's drug policy ranged from anger to dismay to compassion.

The Hornets were in Memphis to play the Grizzlies on Saturday night, without the reserve forward known to teammates as "Birdman," whose dismissal was announced by the league Friday.

"You're a little shocked. You're a little disappointed. I even got angry at first," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "But then you have to start thinking about the person. Bird obviously needs some help in dealing with this situation, so then you start having compassion for him as a person. You stop thinking about the basketball part of it."

The 27-year-old Andersen averaged 5.0 points and 4.8 rebounds in 32 games this season, his fifth in the NBA. He played three seasons for the Denver Nuggets before joining the Hornets.

According to the league's collective bargaining agreement, a player only can be disqualified for a fourth positive test for performance-enhancing drugs, or a first positive test for "drugs of abuse." Andersen has never been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs.

The drugs on the "abuse" list are amphetamine and its analogs, which include methamphetamine; cocaine; LSD; opiates, including heroin, codeine and morphine; and PCP.

Andersen must wait two years before he can apply for reinstatement, the league said.

Neither the NBA nor the players association is allowed to comment on specifics of a player's drug test. Union representatives already have said they plan to file a grievance

It's exactly the same thing that happened with Michael Ray Richardson, Lew Lloyd and Wiggins. They've just changed the terminology so that it sounds a little less harsh.

Anderson was dismissed from the league for a minimum of two years. He's not getting paid and you are not allowed to trade players that aren't eligible to play in the league. Even if you could trade him, what's the Hornet's motivation to do so since they're not paying him?

Well if that's the case then my idea is useless.

I just assumed since it's a two year suspension and he's under contract for four years or whatever that he would still be considered on their payroll just ineligible to play. If they don't have to pay him, that's a completely different story hence no motivation or urgency to rid themselves of him.

Absolutely NO sympathy for the Hornets from me. I've been a Rox fan since '78 and am still upset on how Luke, Wig, Lloyd & their "little friend" cost us a Championship or more in the 80's.
