I'm getting an iBook laptop, and it comes with 30GB for $949. I can upgrade it to 60GB for an extra $67. Is it cheaper to upgrade it later when I actually need the space, or is it a better idea to just get it now?

you have to do it now....you cant just swap parts in a laptop like a desktop. Only RAM can be changed at any time.

You could find out....but I think the hard drive is probably attached to the system board so no u cant without changing the whole system board.

Looks like a new 60GB hard drive for a notebook runs about 80 bucks. But iBooks are a total pain in the ass when it comes to replacing hard drives. You have to take the whole thing apart, with the risk of voiding the warranty. If I were you, I'd pay for the upgrade now.

Maybe it's different for iBooks cause I haven't messed with Macs, but my harddrive in my Toshiba Laptop can be swapped in and out no problem... I've had to replace it twice in fact.

Just a lil cover on the bottom I unscrew and slide the hard drive out, slide the new one in simple as that...

But for your particular case I'd say 67$ for an upgrade to 60GB is a pretty good deal, and ya might as well do it now, especially if you have a lot of music, hi-res photos or games...

It all depends on the way your laptop is put together. The hard drives are standardized, so it really is a matter of unplugging one and plugging in another. I've seen many laptops where the hard drive is user accessable through a slot on the back of the computer.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case on the iBook. You've got to take the fragile case apart to get to the drive. Royal pain in the butt.

    GET THE UPGRADE.

just for the sake of having total warranty on your laptop even with the new addition

and also, adding a 30 gig hd for 60 bucks is def worth it...

As one who has replaced a HDD in a ibook, just pay the extra now. Its not terribly difficult but if you arent real comfortable taking stuff apart dont bother. Save yourself some headache. ;)

As a former product specialist for Apple I can confirm that swapping the hard drive, aside from being a pain if you don't know what you are doing, will void your warranty.
Buy the upgraded hard drive from Apple but buy bare minimum RAM and get aftermarket RAM with a lifetime warranty and install it yourself.
Apple RAM only has a year warranty.
Oh, and be sure to get the AppleCare Protection Plan. It covers you for 3 years instead 1 for hardware failure and includes 3 years tech support instead of the normal 90 days.

yea i really think u should upgrade the hdd because its a new computer and ur going to expect it to be with u for around 3 to 4 years so might as well stock up on hdd space. Thats why i have a useless 280 GB
