I am part of a 14-team fantasy baseball league at Sandbox and our league is "FP". Here is my 25 player roster: C-Charles Johnson C-Mike Matheny (subject to waiver-wire) 1B-Jason Giambi 1B-David Segui 2B-Damion Easley 3B-Ken Caminiti 3B-Aaron Boone SS-Jose Valentin SS-Royce Clayton OF-Gary Sheffield OF-Jim Edmonds OF-Carl Everett OF-Garrett Anderson OF-John Vander Wal OF-Jay Payton (subject to waiver-wire) OF-Ray Lankford SP-Pedro Martinez SP-Darryl Kile SP-Mike Hampton SP-Shawn Estes SP-James Baldwin SP-Julian Tavarez RP-Dustin Hermanson RP-Gabe White Ok, the problem I have is that I feel I am not too strong at 2B or RP. I drafted Hermanson believing he was going to close for St. Louis this season, but now it seems he is going to be in the rotation come opening day. White is strictly a set-up man and he will not be closing any games, so I need a closer bad. Easley is adequate at 2B, but I feel that I need to upgrade there. I feel I am strong at all my other positions barring injuries. I have told the other GMs in my league that anyone is available on my team, even Pedro himself. I have gotten numerous offers for Pedro already, but I am very cautious to do anything too quickly because I am not too sure I should deal Pedro regardless of what is being offered. Needless to say, everyone wants him. Since this is my first year playing fantasy baseball I would really appreciate any advice you could give me on my team involving who should be untouchable and who should be trade bait. Be honest and brutal if need be, because I really want to win and any help given to me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks beforehand, countingcrow ------------------
Trade Edmonds or Sheffield or Hampton for a good reliever. You should be able to get Mantei or Todd Jones for Edmonds or Hampton. You might be able to get Rocker or someone better for Sheffield. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
Do not, I repeat,
DO NOT
Trade Pedro!!! There are only 4 outstanding pitchers in fantasy baseball and he is one of them. You have nice starting pitching. There are lots of relief pitchers on the waiver wire. Did anyone in your league draft Tom Gordon? He will be the main man for the Cubs this year. He is coming off an injury that cost him most of 2 years. He was (and will be) one of the best relief pitchers in MLB. I have seen him pitch this spring, believe me when I say he will have a huge year. Trade bait for a 2nd baseman? Segui, Cammy and Garrett Anderson. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
Thanks for the advice Bob. I just got a trade offer that really intrigues me. I was offered Barry Zito and Mariano Rivera for Pedro. If I were to accept this trade how much of a risk do you think Zito would be? I know Rivera is a sure thing as is Pedro. IMO Zito is going to have a huge season, but is it still enough to garner me giving away Pedro? It feels good to have the Shaq of baseball on my team! ------------------
Let me put it another way. Pedro is untouchable. Zito is basically a rookie (only played half a season) Rivera is good, but will get you no where near the fantasy points Pedro does. If you trade Pedro, you have an average team, with him you have a chance to win it all. This is all just my opinion based on experience. Keep him and build around him. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley) [This message has been edited by BobFinn* (edited March 30, 2001).]
So you think he should trade Pedro, Bob? In my opinion, no one is untouchable. Hell, I have Randy Johnson and I'd consider trading him if I got enough in return. Granted, it would take a lot -- probably another team's #1 & #2 round picks depending on who they are, maybe more.. but I'd definitely consider it. I won my league last year with only a medium pitching staff (Glavine was my ace) so a stud pitcher does not automatically equal success. Then again, my last league was roto scoring and yours in FP, so there could be some difference. In short, hold onto Pedro unless you get a whopper of a deal in which you are the clear winner. Reject silly trades like the one PhiSlammaJamma recently offered me (Johnson for Estalella, Glaus, Burba, Foulke -- yeesh.. what was he thinking). If I had your team, my top priority would be to try to unload Hampton or an outfielder for a good RP, then see about getting better at 3B and 2B. Good luck. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
fadeaway, The only way I would even consider trading Pedro (if I had him) is if I were to get Bagwell/Helton - ARod/Jeter - Piazza/IRod - ALomar/Alfonso - Glaus/Batista - Ramirez/Bonds/Guerrero - Rivera/Nenn/Hoffman Any combination of above names. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
I already tried to trade Darryl Kile for Isringhausen and Rivera in separate one-for-one deals and my proposals were declined. It is absurd what some of my fellow GMs are asking in return for a middle-of-the-road closer (Graves, Leskanic, Koch, Foulke,etc.). One guy has Hoffman, Rivera, and Sasaki and he is not willing to trade any of these three unless I deal Pedro to him. Is it possible to win my league without an established closer? ------------------
Yes There are always good relief pitchers on the waiver wire. You are way ahead of him in the pitching department. Pedro and Kile alone will bring you more points than his 3 relievers. You have the best pitcher in baseball. Stop worrying about getting a top notch reliever. Get 2 adequate ones and you will be fine. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
Bob, I need some more advice. I inquired about Ugueth Urbina's availablity from a fellow GM and he is willing to trade him since he has Derek Lowe and Keith Foulke also on his roster. He said that he is not looking for pitching, so what would be a good offer to make him? Urbina trade rumors to Chicago lately kinda scare me a little with Gordon already in Chicago as the closer so this could be a risk. Not to mention Urbina is coming off surgery. Take a look at my roster, and tell me what you would offer for Urbina. Thanks! ------------------
crow, i would offer him either sheffield/edmonds plus a backup elsewhere for urbina, another player(of) ------------------ How Sweet It Is! How Sweet It Is! Gene Peterson on the rockets winning the 1995 championship over the Orlando Magic
i also like finns suggestion of garrett straight up ------------------ How Sweet It Is! How Sweet It Is! Gene Peterson on the rockets winning the 1995 championship over the Orlando Magic
Try offering Garrett Anderson straight up. He should go for that. If not, throw in either Segui or one of your shortstops (I would keep Clayton) Good Luck. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
I offered him Carl Everett straight up for Urbina and he declined the trade. His counter offer was Charles Johnson and Everett for Urbina and Ben Molina. I haven't declined or accepted this trade as of yet. In your opinion, should I pull the trigger or should I wait for a different deal to come along? ------------------
Don't do that deal. Wait for a better one ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
actually.... isnt he better off with Hermanson??? dont starting pitchers garner more points then relief pitchers??? thats just like having an extra starting pitcher spot on your roster. YOU CHEATER! ------------------ The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?
Crow...I'm the Dog's. I am willing to offer u Benetiz[sp] plus any two other players.....of your choice for pedro. Also...NO ONE on my team is safe...Me and u made some good trades in the past and hopefully we can continue....I got your back man ! You can icq me @ 102361326 ------------------
Nomar>> No, even if he's classified as a reliever, if he starts a game it will be counted as a SP game. Basically, if a pitcher gets a win or loss, it will count as one SP game. If he gets a save or blown save, it will count as a RP game. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
