She's doing alright, you dont replace Lisa's decade of broadcasting in just two weeks, let's give Coop a chance man.
IF this move was in fact intended to bring in a different race to the "family", which you seem to believe, then it is a prime example of why MANY people do not agree with affirmative action. You bring in a person to take over another's job (LISA) simply for diversity sake. That's crap. Lisa did the job much better than Cooper is doing now. How do you think Lisa feels about this? It's a slap in the face is what it is. It would be understandable to me if Lisa desired to go elsewhere, and required a replacement, but it didn't happen that way. Lisa theoretically got the boot to appease the savage minority who cry foul at every opportunity. You can laud that all you want, while I HOCK at the notion. IF, IF, IF "The move was still an attempt by Les to racially diversify the ROX family..." and that "His attempt is failing miserably...." , then his attempt deserves to crash and burn. Honestly, they very well may have wanted to find a person with more Bball knowledge to do the job. That's fine, moves are made in this world, and job requirement may change. But if the best they can do is Miss Cooper, they shouldn't have done it. And if they narrowed their search and limited it to African Americans, or any other ONE race, they do a disservice to the community. Even moreso if they HAD to have a woman to boot. By the way, I'm a white man.
I was thinking of the same thing, but the Chronicle didn't cross my mind. Actually, I was wanting to write someone about that freaking beer commercial that shows on Rocket time outs.... http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67609 I agree, good job.
Actually, I wouldn't want a public dissing of Miss Cooper in the paper. She's doing her best at what she's got. The harsh words on this board may even be too much, and if Miss Cooper is reading this, I'm sorry if I offended you. I just sincerely believe that you need improvement.
Excuse my rudeness, FranchNot. I was mostly reacting to the AA reference. It's hard to claim Coop is a "token" black tv sports analyst. She's more like a token former WNBA superstar. Rockets tv is the Bill and Calvin show. Calvin alone counts for a lot in terms of ethnic representation. You also have to count Steve, Cat, Mooch,... In general, Blacks don't need much AA in the BBall world anymore. Tell me one big national sports show that doesn't have a rich black person in it. Many of them have more blacks than whites or anyone else. Black players, coaches, refs, trainers, reporters, journalists, GMs, agents, presidents, and owners. That must have been AA all along. After all, what do black people know about basketball? That's not to say getting to this point has been a walk in the park. It was so ironic when Limbaugh said the press was being nice to McNabb because they wanted to see a black quarterback succeed. For one thing, blacks historically have had to deal with a lot of ignorance, slurs, bum deals, and harrassment -- at the job, in the press, and from "fans"-- to succeed in the sports world. For another, there are already a bunch of great black NFL Qbacks. McNair, Vick, McNabb... OK, only a bunch of irish-black Qbacks. In short, Limbaugh's comment was ignorant and based entirely on his reactionary pre-conception. Actually, it's latinos and asians who are under-represented in sports tv. You don't even see many latino tv people for baseball. Latinos are severly under-represented in the English media, even though they're the largest minority group and most speak English more often and better than they do Spanish. I'm white-bred white, with hints of pink and blue.
Actually, I'm probably a mut of some sort. Off topic, I've got a friend that looks white as any other, but recently found out that his real Father is part black, and part white, Mulato, I believe is the term. I met his real Father, and you can tell from looking at him that he was mixed. But my friend, you could not tell. Imagine being 26 years old, and learning that your mother hid the fact that your "father" was not your real father at all. So you find your real father, who is of the opposite race so to speak, and try to start over.......he took it quite well. Some day, we may have a hard time calling people black or white, since the lines may some day blurr to the point that we can't tell.
Going against the grain a bit, I was ecstatic when they fired Larry, I mean, Lisa. I thought she was horrendous and would always tune out the halftime and post-game shows solely because of her. I was tired of seeing her tower over our players in interviews and shine those overly pearly white teeth while making some corny scripted comment. However, little did I know that her replacement would be as talentless a broadcaster as this city has ever seen. No need to rehash the critiques, but I can't believe this great city, she was the best we could come up with. Maybe it was affirmative action. If it was, it failed because the idea of affirmative action is to put qulaified, talented individuals into a position in which they can succeed but would otherwise not have the opportunity. That clearly did not happen here.
I love Lisa, I always liked her. I hate when she does her little dance moves. She's trying too hard to be cool. I think what they also need is a new studio.
The broadcasters are employees of the Rockets IIRC.. and you guys are waaay too harsh on her.. How would you like being thrown in to a job that you arent used to doing, and have no training to do? Sure, she is unfomfortable in front of the camera, who wouldnt be if they weren't used to being on in front of thousands of people? and it wasnt AA..they obviously wanted someone with real court knowledge and experience playing the game....and Cooper was the only one they had without going outside their organization. besides...she is here, you should just go ahead and get used to it or dont watch the halftime show cause she aint going anywhere this season....no matter how loudly you b****....they will let her finish the season and then decide if they want to make a change.
That's the whole point....why replace someone who was very comfortable in front of the camera, and with lots of experience, with someone who looks like a scared deer everytime the film is rolling? I really don't see the reasoning behind it....The Rockets thought the fans would appreciate someone who has more first hand knowledge of basketball? Wow thats great....she played basketball. That doesn't make watching a train wreck every halftime any more enjoyable. I will take your advice though...I will not be watching a Rockets halftime show for the rest of the season.
Cooper is terrible. She belongs on MNF with that horrible sideline reporter they have. LM was MUCH better
