How did the fool above me get unbanned?

Anyway, Rice is a much better school than UH, but Rice doesn't have a law school...

I like Rice Village. Played tennis at Rice many times. It's a much nicer area there than around UH, where I lived.

Rice is merely an ok school...not really great at anything.

Many schools out there that are much better.

Actually they have a top 5 architecture program.. I was looking into it a few years ago when I was making my portfolio. I'm sure there are many other things Rice is good at. I believe one of the nanotechnology professors invented or created Buckminsterfullerene (sp?)?

#1 MBA program in the southwest / #7 overall
#1 in student quality of life
    #4 for best value/education
Two nobel peace award winners in chemistry
Top 5 baseball program over the past decade
7 career research awards, 2nd only to MIT (10)
    Top 10 bio/medical program
Top 10 architecture program in the country.
    Top 10 research program
    Top 10 political science program

...just to name a few. Put all that together and there are probably only a handful of institutions with those credentials. So by your standard, Rice isn't #1 in many departments ...but as a whole body of work, they are pretty darn close to the top of the list.

I'm not saying Rice is bad school. Rice is obv the best overall school in Texas and is heads and shoulders above the other schools in the state.

However, every decent school has at least a few areas where it is strong in. However, they do lack in several key aspects, which are absolutely necessary for an elite first tier institution: name recognition, overall alumni connections and as a result exit opps for students, overall funding, clear dominance in any specific field (admittedly Rice is pretty good in the sciences)...etc...

Basically a solid second tier school - better research and exit opps than your state schools (excluding Berkeley and UVA), but lags far behind the first tier schools.

Btw there is absolutely no way Rice is top 10 in overall MBA rankings.

Rice is not top 10... it says #1 in southwest but I highly doubt it. I believe it just started like 5 years ago and from what my friends have told me, it isn't that prestigious at all.

Heres UT rankings  according to wiki
As of 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked forty-three UT graduate programs and specialties in the top ten nationally, and another fifty-three others ranked in the top 25.[45] Among these programs include the seventh-ranked College of Education,[46] the 10th-ranked Cockrell School of Engineering,[47] and the 15th-ranked School of Law.[48] Four UT graduate programs were ranked first in the nation, including Accounting and Petroleum Engineering.[45] While the university does not have a medical school, it houses medical programs associated with other campuses and allied health professional programs, which has contributed to the College of Pharmacy's number two ranking by U.S. News and World Report.[49][50] Additionally, UT Austin's library system contains over 8 million volumes and is the fifth-largest academic library in the nation.[51]

The McCombs School of Business was ranked the #6 overall undergraduate business program (#3 among public universities) in 2009 by U.S. News and World Report,[52] ranked first in undergraduate and graduate accounting programs,[53][54][55] the #3 undergraduate and graduate MIS programs,[56][57] the #2 undergraduate marketing program,[58] the #2 undergraduate ethics program,[59] the #4 undergraduate finance program,[60] the #4 management research productivity,[61] the #5 undergraduate international business program,[62] the #5 undergraduate insurance/risk management program,[63] and the #18 (full-time) MBA program.[64] A 2005 Bloomberg survey also ranked the school #5 among all business schools and #1 among public business schools for the largest number of alumni who are S&P 500 CEOs.[65] Similarly, a 2005 USA Today report ranked the university as "the number one source of new Fortune 1000 CEOs".

To be fair, UH and Rice are no where near the level of the Longhorns in Football or Basketball(at least not anymore)... naming the two biggest sports in college.

I'm not saying Rice is bad school. Rice is obv the best overall school in Texas and is heads and shoulders above the other schools in the state.

U.S. News and World Report's College rankings are generally listed as the "oscars" for college campuses. They usually give out the ranks that most people go by (Princeton Review is also up there).

If you go by this... Rice is ranked #17... which is pretty good. The next closest one in Texas is #43 which is UT in Austin.

For MBA's.. yeah it's not even close. Rice is #38. McCombs (UT) is #14 (which would lead Texas universities).

Is it just me or does it seem like any time a college-related thread is made, sooner or later, it comes down to one big UT circle jerk?

UT's a great school guys, we believe you, seriously

If this has anything to do with my post... the only reason I mentioned UT was because it's the next school right behind Rice in Texas. I had no other reason to mention it.

Nah, it wasn't anything personal to you, or even SBK really. It was just an observation. Well, not even an observation really, just more of a general feeling.

    Maybe I'm paranoid :p

Um, what's your definition of the first tier? Rice is a top 20 school in every ranking out there. You're right, it's not an Ivy Leauge school, but it is by all accounts a top tier school.

Rice is a top 20 school in every ranking out there - pretty bold statement you're making there. You believe it will pass the hammer test?

Quite frankly not all ivies are considered top tier either. In terms of exit opps, and academic prestige, the tier 1 schools are:

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT/CAltech, Chicago, Columbia, Penn

    Tier 1a schools would be:
Duke, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Cornell, WashU, CalBerkeley, UVA, Georgetown, Brown, NYU, JHU, Emory (maybe)

Another way to think about it is that when you think Rice and you think about their peer group, you do not think about the schools listed above. Instead, names like Vanderbilt, USC, Notre Dame - all very respectable schools, but not top tier.

I don't know what you mean by the "hammer test," but can you explain how you came up with these "tiers?" (other than "when you think Rice...you do not think about the schools listed above")

I've always thought of Rice/USC/ND/Vandy as being in the mix with the schools you listed as 1a. Maybe I'm giving too much credence to US News, but when you starting splitting these "tiers" so finely, much of the meaning is lost.

LOL how can anyone claim Rice isn't a great school?? It's more focused on sciences and engineering than other large schools, but they excel in most everything they do.

Second tier? Are you ****ing joking? I didn't go to Rice but it has always[\I] been a top school.

Rice doesn't have the name recognition? Are you ****ing joking? It's internationally renowned (look at the student population).

It's right there with Stanford, Vanderbilt, Emory, and Duke (or, right below the Ivy League schools if only for lack of endowment).

So because one part of a mega school is "better" that makes it "better" than Rice? I don't doubt that Texas is a good school with strong programs, but OVERALL I think it's a difficult to claim Texas is better than Rice. That's a tough comparison to begin with considering Texas offers a lot more programs than Rice.

There are good students at Texas, but I don't see how anyone could deny the claim that the quality of students at Rice, overall, is stronger than Texas, and comparable to those "just below Ivy League" schools.
