I want my $3 back!!! Thanks man. I'm not going to have the time to board, so I'll hope for the best. I haven't noticed anyone else boarding up around here either.
Standard, that is, non-safety glass, tends to break into large chunks and as such has more surface area, mass, and thus much more potential for causing injury. Because regular glass breaks up into large pieces, taping can be of some benefit. A big X on your window will be pretty useless, however.
Sums it up. Basically the tape might help you clean up the broken glass by keeping it together. Totally not worth it. And just a reminder, make sure you have a MANUAL can opener. That electric can opener is only good for bludgeoning open containers in an outage. Also consider moving your car if you don't have a garage. If it's not too far, try to move it away from trees that could fall on it. Semi-related, when the second to last hurricane hit my area a guy was sitting in his car in the parking lot of my old high school. I have no idea why he was there, but a tree fell on the car and killed him. And this was a cat 2 I believe.
If you're traveling away from the storm and get a late start, I'd suggest: a couple cans of fix-a-flat a good spare tire four way tire tool 2-ton jack small assortment of tools jumper cables empty gas can(s) water antifreeze flashlight with extra batteries blankets/pillows -in case you need to sleep in the car car chargers for cell phones power inverter for plug-ins (lap top, small tv, etc.) ice chest peanut butter, bread or some other easily prepped food If you have one... a gps if not, a current map to avoid the clogged highways Come 8-9 AM the interstates are going to start to clog up. Just spoke with my Dad, they took longer to get from Lake Jackson (Freeport area) to Conroe than usual on Wednesday night, and at that point only southern Brazoria County had announced mandatory evacuations. Everything south of HWY 35 in Brazoria County is on Mandatory evac beginning Thursday at 8 AM. Stay safe!
Just got back from WAL-ly-MART-inez. No kids running around the store. No housewives with huge cartloads. I easily found WATER, batteries, an extra flashlight, nightlights, and non-perishabe foods. I love shopping at midnight. If you're evacuating, I don't recommend I-10. There's a streeet named WestView just north of I-10 that runs parallel to it. Take that and THEN take the Beltway to 290 or to I-10. DON'T take I-10 between 610 and the Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8). Or, just south of I-10, take Memorial or Briar Forest Dr. There is also CLAY just north of Westview.
I'm pretty sure people don't tape their windows to prevent them from breaking, but rather to try to keep all the glass from flying around the house if they DO break. And in that sense, I don't think it is a waste of time to tape them. One thing I would add is a wired phone. One that doesn't have to plug into an electrical outlet. These phones are powered by the phone lines themselves, and sometimes the phone lines survive a storm even if power lines don't. I know people have cell phones, but I seem to remember the cell networks getting so overloaded during Rita that it was hard to get a call out.
It's real hard to get the tape glue off the glass afterwards. You end up with those ghost X's on your window forever.
I just filled up the propane tank at U-haul. I was first in line, but by the time I left there were 10 cars waiting. some good things to buy are: peanut butter crackers granola bars I try to buy things I will actually use over time. We go camping a lot, so we are pretty well prepared to be without electricity for a while. That is what I am not looking forward to. Cell towers can get knocked out, plus if power is out you can't recharge the batteries (I guess you can use a car charger), the plug in phone is a good idea.
Oh, I forgot the most important supply. Ingredients for hurricanes: Hurricane, New Orleans Style 1 oz white rum 1 oz Jamaican dark rum 1 oz Bacardi® 151 rum 3 oz orange juice 3 oz unsweetened pineapple juice 1/2 oz grenadine syrup crushed ice
Seriously... Winds will start to pick up sometime tomorrow at which point it's too late to try to get out. What are they doing? Is there a room full of sweaty administration officials working the issue.... wondering... "hey some of our students might die trying to evacuate, but we'll get 6 hours of school in!"?
My family will probably sleep in our daughters room Friday night since she's surrounded by the most walls, but she does have a window. If all hell were to break loose we could get in her walk in closet. My kids are 4 and 3. I've already prepped them saying we are going "camping" Friday night, trying not to scare them. I'm going to make sure to unplug everything. My neighbor told me how he lost 3 tiv from a lightning hit one time.
Got a couple of cases of beer for the weekend. We're going to grill all the meat in the freezer tomorrow morning just in case. Don't want to have to throw it away. We're in Kingwood and not expecting anything really bad. Worst thing will be no electricity. I might end up sitting in my car just to cool off!
Make sure your digital camera batteries are charged. I'm betting some of us will have some interesting pics to share when it's all over.
We have everything ready except for the generators. We're probably going to board up the restroom windows in case we need to take place during the storm. We have too many windows to board up and we're off 290 and beltway 8 so I think we should be okay? I hope. My parents, sister and their dog are coming over tomorrow to stay with us. Their house is in Zone C for evacuations and there are trees around their house and our house only has one tree in the front yard, if it happens to fall, the garage and brick wall will prevent the tree from hitting the house, hopefully! I think we're ready. I'm just not ready for the power to go out because it's gonna be hot.
it reminds me to go get some beer and get the ground beef out of the freezer to might as well use it.
