So Im thinking next summer of taking a trip to Roatan, Honduras to do community service work there. I would like to stay at least two weeks, and do things like help clean up areas, construct shelters (used to work construction), donate food, etc...

Anyone know of any good groups I could contact with to maybe request funding to carry out this idea? Most of the cost will be incurred by me obviously, and I won't be able to take hammers, drills, gallons of water, etc. on a plane or ship, so I would imagine I will need to purchase these things when I get there.

Anyone have any advice on what could be done? I know clean water is at a premium in poverty stricken countries. While deployed, I found simple things like chocolate could really brighten up a person's day. Soap, diapers, the like.

I know times are tight but Im just trying to make this happen without going broke in the process. Any advice?

I'm going to be doing the same next year, but probably through my university. See if you can apply to a program like that.

Habitat for Humanity has a pretty strong presence in Honduras, and it's in line with what you want to do.

I went with a group to Hungary. Was a good time. But it really felt like they were more after our donation than actual "physical help".
