I used to like Hubie but I've grown weary of him. Too much STATS "Yao Ming is a terrific player. He shoots 86 percent from the line, and at a 56 percent clip from the field. Lets not forget Yao Ming blocks about 2 and a half shots per game." JVG is much better.
Hubie's always been a numbers guy. He was one of the first basketball commentators to put an emphasis on stats during games. Sometimes he'll sort of make the numbers up to make a point, but he gets the right ideas across which is the most important thing.
Hubie's definitely one of the best. By far him and JVG as many have mentioned are top notch commentators. Humor mixed with just a ridiculous amount of basketball knowledge. Doug Collins on the other hand....
Pau Gasol has played brilliantly with the Lakers, particularly when Bynum hasn't been around. What a perfect match for that squad. He deserves the praise.
Oh by the way.. My least liked NBA commentator has to be Reggie Miller hands-down. That guy is obnoxious and talks about how physical the old school days were compared to now. Now, this is reggie miller we're talking about. Also, I don't know if its just me but I think Reggie in particular caters to other black players. I notice this especially when he talks about the Yao Ming - Dwight Howard argument. Also one time, randomly Tiger Woods' name came up and Reggie immediately awkwardly popped off: "The Greatest!". That's just one of the many times I noticed Reggie's bias. I think Reggie also tries to stay hip, like he's cool with all the rappers and celebrities. No Reggie, you're a dork.
An old friend of mine was telling me a story about Hubie having drinks with some baseball refs and how they couldn't understand how this guy was a commentator because every other word out of his mouth was f***, s*** or mf'er.
I love Hubie...he's the best. I just wish he would stop calling everyone 7 footers. Seriously, any big with length is a 7 footer in his eyes. I remember seeing him do a raptors game and he said they had three 7 footers on the court together...lmao,what?
Hubie is the best color commentator. He has great insight on the players and the flow of the game. I'm always excited when he's calling a Rockets game. I also love his one man war for the advancement of second person. "You've got to like color commentator who use second person." If I was in college, I'd have to make that a drinking game. Every time Hubie flips into second person, it's a shot. Of course, I'd probably be comatose by the half.
I don't think you get what I mean. I'm not denying Gasol's level of play since becoming a Laker because that would be just purely asinine. But he could simply just be standing there on defense, and Hubie would go bonkers over him. It's sort of like when JVG goes out of his way to compliment a Rocket player, but not nearly as bad.
I totally disagree, he is the absolute WORST IMO. He is sooo boring. He shows no excitement during big plays and his knowledge is very overrated. He was unbearable during the game yesterday. He kept saying things that made me want to punch him in the face: -"Erik Dampier is one of the best shot blockers we have in our league." -"Rafer Alston is a good acquisition for Orlando because he can penetrate through the lane and finish around the hoop along with consistintly knock down 3 pointers" (paraphrasing) many other quotes along those lines
Hubie often talks too much, he was giving some explanation last night that ran over like two critical transition plays. And alot of the time it's just reading off the stat sheet. Van Gundy I like, Doris Burke I like, she really knows her stuff and doesn't try to crack jokes, just gives good analysis.
Other than Rafer finishing around the hoop, everything he said is pretty much true. He does penetrate effectively and as low as his FG% is, he does knock down the open 3 surprisingly well. As for Dampier, he gets 1.3 blocks in just 23 minutes. That's 15th in the league per 48 minutes. Better than Duncan, Okafor, Yao...
Hubie doesn't show excitement ? On the contrary he does (watch the phoenix game earlier this year), just not with the volume or emphasis a play-by-play commentator would but that's not their job. They're there to give insights on the game, which is what almost all colour commentators lack these days. Just look at Mark Jackson, Reggie Miller, Clyde Drexler etc. Doug Collins used to be good and had great chemistry with Ron Thulin but nowadays he repeats the same thing over and over and I only like games with either Doug / Reggie is because of the play-by-play commentators so Kevin Harlan and Marv Albert. I do not understand why Reggie is there in the first place, the Tsar and Marv have always worked together and they're okay when it's just the two of them. Bill Walton is also a great colour commentator and is funny without being too obvious like JVG and Mark, so too bad he's not in the studio. And who I absolutely hate is that woman on ESPN along with that other douche. They did the Bulls and Nuggets games during the streak which totally messed the games up. I do not understand why there are women covering men sports anyway but that's another discussion.
Hubie >>>>>> The man is smart when it comes to basketball. He doesn't say stuff that is common sense. He gives you in depth knowledge on the situation of that team. I like JVG but if you were not a Rockets fan you would probably think Hubie was better. I like listening to JVG but he says some outrageous things at times, usually because he loves some of his former Rocket players.
Tiger woods is 25% black, his father was mixed race and his mother is mixed race. BTW, I did notice he was quite critical of Nowitzki not getting to the line and calling him a shooter ala Korver, but obviously he's never looked at any stats because Nowitzki gets to the line with the best of them.....
I know I had this conversation last year. You're talking about Doris Burke, and I think she does a good job.
I love his commentary, but sometimes he talks a little too much. Doug Collins is annoying. He has little cliches now. "Kevin, you see this guy and what he's done in the league... (insert player, bull**** analysis).
How many "black" golfers are there? And how many golfers are there in the world that are as good as Tiger? You could hear it in his voice that Reggie was beaming with pride.
