desktop or laptop might make a difference to some.. since you talked about building, i assume you mean desktop..
Neither. Build my own. Just finished a new build last week actually. But in the corporate world, HP for servers and Dell for PC's.
Had a Dell laptop at work that died after about 2 years. Had a Dell desktop at home that died after 3 years (and 6 hours with a guy in India trying to diagnose the problem) Bought a HP desktop 3.5 years ago and it's still going...
I would say HP because the student discount is down right amazing... well, until i got my Acer. Acer is amazing....
Dell desktops are pretty solid. I like HP's laptops better. I would rather get a Lenovo laptop if going the PC route.
listening to people's opinion in these kinda things are useless. 25 people will say how they hate dell. 25 will say they love it. that said, they all suck. pcs have become cheaper at the expense of quality. i have a dell desktop from 2001 (dimension 8100) that i paid about 2000 bucks for that still works. i looked at the parts inside..even the floppy drive was a sony. now i bet people cant even pronounce companies that make the internal parts. go with the company that has the best customer service, and warranty. both of those are better with the business side of both companies.
More people in Houston work for HP than Dell. Go with HP! I agree that PCs have gotten cheaper at the expense of quality, however, you can get what you pay for. Both Dell and HP have high end lines that are of much higher quality if you want to pay for it.
i hate how the pc business has become. you can't recommend a brand anymore because they are all the same piece of crap. even if you a pay a premium you are only paying for features, not quality.
That's the exact point! I built my own desktop that I'm currently using for almost 3 years and have already upgraded the device. It works pretty well for now.
Asus. I built a asus laptop for my lil bro almost five years ago. He took it with him while in Iraq and it's never had a problem.
i am in need for a desktop and i am thinking about building my own. only thing that stops me is warranty. if something fails, i have to find the parts that's jacked up, which a lot of times is harder that it looks, and then deal with the different manufacturers. also during the initial building, you have to make sure the crap you buy is compatible, otherwise more hassle to return stuff.
