This is an excellent article about the stereotyping in sports and in the world as a whole. Why society, for some reason, is outraged at the Imus thing but lets other things that may be deemed slightly less racist, just pass by. It also seems to delve a bit into the concept of the "Lucifer Effect" (what makes good people do bad things), made popular by Phillip Zambardo. I made a seperate thread because I didn't want the article to get lost in the other one. Merge if necessary.... The article is very long and best read on the website, as it has links to other articles embedded in it. http://thesituationist.wordpress.com/2007/04/12/hoyas-hos-and-gangstas/
Racism is like the Seattle Zone in the 90s or The Knicks' Fouling [Jordan Rules] You foul someone one so hard so often the Refs don't even call it until it is something severe all the mere small Hacks are let go . . . because you have built a rep as a hack . .and those lil fouls move from being Foul to 'just ruff play' Nowadays . . .the lil racism is barely noticed it isn't until something 'MAJOR' hat people notice and even then it is questioned if it is really racism After a while. . .I doubt racism will be distinguishable from just bad manners to alot of people Rocket River
It did. It came from the movie School Daze. They mentioned Spike Lee and were referencing the Jigaboos vs. The Wannabes and the song “Straight & Nappy”. I put that on the website too.
You still haven't responded in the other thread as to what you meant when you stated there was "one in every crowd."
For yet another time... Imus made the reference to "nappy-headed hos" which then brought them around to School Daze. They didn't start out talking about the movie and come up with "nappy-headed hos" in that context. It's clear from the conversation that Imus was not thinking about the movie when he said what he did.
They know what they are talking about in advance. They have writers. It is not nearly as impromptu as they make it out to be. Basically a lot of it is flat out fake. They don't even believe half the stuff they say. It is all for shock and ratings. Basically, it is entertainment.
So you're saying it was scripted? If that's so, I'm glad the guy is gone. I didn't have a strong feeling one way or the other on his job status, but if what you're saying is true... and they thought about that in advance, that several people attached to the show saw it and left it in, and he still said it... then yes, good riddance.
people choose what they want to hear and what they dont. one thing im still unclear. why is nappy all of a sudden a racist term? being black is neither sufficient nor necessary to being nappy.
What I am totally unclear about is how a nappy headed white dude like Imus, whose hair looks like the "after" picture from an electrocution, can call any other human "nappy headed" with a straight face!
now thats the best point made all day! ohh the hypocrisy. Although, if i was 60+ i would be happy to have any hair
When is the last time you heard "nappy headed" refer to anyone other than black people? And the term, "nappy headed hos", would that be a remark Imus would make to, say, an all-white female lacrosse team or hockey team? No because when he said that term he knew it had racial connotations. You know what? I'm glad we're no longer back in the Deep South before the Civil Rights Era where whites could denigrate blacks or even murder blacks all they wanted to without consequence and everyone would nod in agreement. Now its no longer accepted. But it sounds like a lot of you white people criticizing the criticism of Imus want to go back to those good 'ole days.
i dont know when the last time was, but i use to have a friend (white) and we called him nappy all the time b/c of his hair.
I don't think the actual "nappy headed ho" comment itself was completely scripted. I do think bringing up the different teams and comparing them to the "jigaboos and wannabees" in School Daze was planned.
I think it is the other way around. He called them a "School Daze" jigaboo, which I think is not the same from just calling them a jigaboo straight up. He was referencing the movie characters. It then has a different meaning. Same with the nappy-headed part. The jigaboo characters in the movies sing a song about being nappy headed. The "ho" part was just an old white man trying to sound cool. That is the worst part to me.
im not familiar with the movie. regardless, its overreaction. insensitive comment? sure. inappropriate? yup. does it deserve to get this much attention...no
Yes you've figured everybody out. Anybody who defends Imus is clearly part of a secret plot to reintroduce slavery to the world. You know, I saw this guy the other day who gave a dirty look to a black man. Clearly a slavery proponent. And Betty White? Don't even get me started... I haven't said anything positive about Mr. Imus and I don't intend to but this is about as well thought out as Mr. Imus' turn of phrase.
