[rquoter] Dear Pat Robertson, I know that you know that all press is good press, so I appreciate the shout-out. And you make God look like a big mean bully who kicks people when they are down, so I'm all over that action. But when you say that Haiti has made a pact with me, it is totally humiliating. I may be evil incarnate, but I'm no welcher. The way you put it, making a deal with me leaves folks desperate and impoverished. Sure, in the afterlife, but when I strike bargains with people, they first get something here on earth -- glamour, beauty, talent, wealth, fame, glory, a golden fiddle. Those Haitians have nothing, and I mean nothing. And that was before the earthquake. Haven't you seen "Crossroads"? Or "Damn Yankees"? If I had a thing going with Haiti, there'd be lots of banks, skyscrapers, SUVs, exclusive night clubs, Botox -- that kind of thing. An 80 percent poverty rate is so not my style. Nothing against it -- I'm just saying: Not how I roll. You're doing great work, Pat, and I don't want to clip your wings -- just, come on, you're making me look bad. And not the good kind of bad. Keep blaming God. That's working. But leave me out of it, please. Or we may need to renegotiate your own contract. Best, Satan [/rquoter] from letters to the editor, Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Olberman is an arrogant ass... I don't stand behind Limbaugh but I do defend him from unreasonable attacks. I'm still waiting for the "racist" part of Limbaugh's comments to be pointed up. If you all don't even want to try, I'm ready to leave this conversation for more important things....
Exactly, that was seven years ago. The fact that this act still catches fish is a testament to something. Not sure what this something is, but probably something not good.
Bit of a broad brush, don't you think, Almu? I believe you when you say he meant it to be funny, but some people, not you, I'm sure, might need to be reminded that there were people who would be described as "white" before 1970 who worked hard to improve things for those who came later. Forgive me if I might think that some of the tolerance you see today is because of people working for change before 1970, and after, not simply because "the guy next door died, most of the people on the block turned from white to less white to more mixed. And the town as a whole has really tanned up!" I hope you take this in a good way, but I'm sitting here shaking my head over the fact that I had ardent (read heated) conversations with many, many people, handed out leaflets, went on protest marches, sometimes dozens of us, sometimes hundreds, and sometimes thousands, trying to change the attitude of the country towards people of color, people of different sexual orientation, people of religious beliefs out of the mainstream, or people with no religious beliefs, and was arrested myself because of how I looked and how I dressed. All the time hoping that in the future, as time passed, things would change for the better. That the hard work and the violence suffered by many (I was only punched a couple of times by ignorant rednecks, so I was lucky... yes, I punched back) would be worth it, that we would see a more liberal America in the future, and that maybe, just maybe, people would remember. You should be banned from this forum. I watch Letterman. Does that mean I'm "OK?" We are all so grateful that you grace us with your presence. Sounding like those you dislike tends to muck up the message, don't you think? A bit of sanity from someone that leans towards the right, not that there's anything wrong with that. Of course you don't stand behind Rush, giddy. You're too busy gleefully standing beside him.
This notion about an entire group of people smacks of the stereotypes and prejudicial thinking that spawns the very racism you claim to want to wash out of our society. My father is 71 years old. He grew up poor in Houston. He is one of the most caring, sympathetic and non-prejudicial people I know. It is my father that instilled in me that judging people by their race, religion or creed is simply not tolerated. Since he is 71, he was around long before your magic date of 1970. He is also white. Good to know that you think this country will be better when he is dead. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you? Diversity just for diversity's sake is not necessarily an improvement. If you have a largely Hispanic area and the Russian Mafia moves in, it is diverse, but not for the better. That is an extreme example. It does. however, illustrate the point. WAY WAY WAY out of bounds, dude. Seriously. You have just told another poster that you hope for his death. Really poor form.
Still waiting for all these racist-labelers to cite the racist aspect of Rush's remarks. Racist is a powerful, ugly word. You should be able to really back it up when you use it... but this crowd does't seem to be able to... I'm not sure what you are charging with this "standing beside him nonsense." Disappointed in you deckard-- thought you were more reasonable in your outlook than some of these flesh-eaters. My stance seems to disquiet you like the ACLU disquiets lots of conservatives. And you think you are the big-hearted, open-minded ones? You are more like the villagers in the Frankenstein movie chasing down the monster. Limbaugh makes an observed opinion about a possible motivation on the part of Obama and that is supposed to make him the lowest of the low, possessing of a life not worth living and unworthy even of hell?
There have been days and months and years outlining exactly what's racist in Rush's speech. You're still waiting because anything less than "I HATE ******S!!!" isn't racist in your book. It's like I've said before: you're a moderate on racism. You're against people using the n word (you are, aren't you?) and you defend everything else. It's a neat system. And very convenient for racists that can manage to avoid the n word.
batman is correct. It has been shown time and time again, yet you seem to deny what is right there in front of you because you cling to the lame rationale that because Rush has a black guest and one other black person agrees with Rush that somehow prevents everything Rush does from being racist. I ask again does that mean a person who murdered someone but still has living friends can't be a murderer?
I guess so. But I didn't say everybody fits the bill. Must of touched a nurve or something. Now, back to the topic... Rush is so powerful, its scary. Imus says "Nappy Headed Hoes" on television and gets fired. Rush says all kind of racist crap every day of the damn week and not a word from Al Sharpton. I guess you have to pick your fights.
I try not to listen to Limbaugh, so I wouldn't know this. Has he expressed any sort of sympathy over what's happened in Haiti? Or has his reaction mainly been, "The Democrats are going to help them to make themselves look good. Especially amongst blacks." He's exploiting his base's fear of a black president. Instead of recognizing that what's happening in Haiti demands immediate attention on humanitarian grounds, he wants to shift focus to ugly speculation -- Obama is black, and Haitians are black, implying (incredibly) that Obama's racism is what is motivating his desire to help them. Limbaugh's position is despicable. He is so focused on bringing down Obama, he can't resist putting that hatred aside for a moment when people (regardless of party affiliation) should be uniting as human beings. The "is it racist or not" argument is beside the point. It could be that Limbaugh he has such a deep hatred towards Obama/Democrats that he is completely numb to the pain and suffering of others that they are trying to help -- in particular minorities and poor people from third world countries. Yeah, I guess that wouldn't make him a racist. Just a horrible person.
even worse, he told his listeners about the white house setting up a website to donate to and he told his listeners NOT to donate to it. there are plenty of others out there to donate to, but its pretty F'ed up to tell your audience not to help simply b/c its a democrat president.
Nice attempt to backtrack....but no. You said that things would change for the better when the white guys who were around before 1970 are dead. My father is a member of that group. Hell yes it touches a nerve when you think the world will be a better place when my father and his contemporaries are dead. Rather than admit your mistake and that your comment was shortsighted at best, you gloss over it as though you being a jackass is somehow my fault. Nice try, junior.
He meant as a group. That doesn't mean each individual in that group contributes negatively. If 40% of a particular group is "good", and 60% is "bad", and moreover that 60% constitutes a large percentage of the "bad" globally, the world may be better off when all in the group are gone. If the good ones can live forever and the bad ones die out that would be even better, but death (unfortunately) does not favor the bad over the good.
I don't want to speak for Almu, but what I understand him to say is this: There is still a generation or two who were reared with some very "backward thinking" ideas about race, poverty, civil rights and the whole milieu of mores and values that allow "hate thought" to continue and be passed on to their children. Not everyone from these generations possessed or passed this thinking forward, if so we would not have seen any improvement. However, as this generational transference of hate "ages out" so to speak, we see continual improvement. While Almu said it in an all-or-nothing manner, I do see some validity in his point.
My point is that what Almu was saying reeks of the same "lump all people of a group together" mentality on which racism is based. In short, he detests (as most of us do) people of an ethnic group being lumped together in a negative light. He turns right around and does the same damned thing about old white guys. It is a tad hypocritical.
