I look at it this way..

There sure are a lot of you Austin people on a Houston message board.. I don't see myself having to go to Austin message boards or depend on Austin to provide me entertainment

In other word when you get your own teams maybe we can talk..

but as long as you are rooting for Houston Rockets.. you should honor the name in front of the team :)

The one main problem I have with Austin is that its citizens seem like they have to remind everyone how cool and hip Austin is and how it's not Houston or Dallas all the freaking time. When I lived in the area for eight years, I grew sick and tired of that.

To me, the city has changed so much in the time I was there to right now, it's really not all that different from any other major city in Texas. It's probably the least like a typical metropolitan city out of the four big ones, but it's not like it used to be.

i lived in houston 77-92 and i've lived in austin 92-present.
the differences are astronomical. listing them out individually would take up too much cyberspace. one is not necessarily "better" than the other. each individual has certain preferences in life that would make one city more preferable to live in than the other.
some of the "anti-austin" points in this thread are severely blown out of proportion:
-all of austin is not "hip."
-all of austin is not "pretentious." are you kidding me??? the amount of money in houston compared to austin and the elitism there doesn't even need to be discussed in the same sentence as austin. austin has michael dell. houston has . . .
-the traffic here is horrible on IH-35 between 183 and Hwy. 71 in the morning and afternoon for about an hour and a half. it's bad on MoPac for about an hour during those same times. if you think that's worse than houston traffic . . .
-not everyone has to get over the river. i live central (slightly north by austin standards) and i cross the river about twice a month (if that.)
-needless to say, i've made quite a few lasting and "real" friendships in my years here in austin. if you live here as a transient, you'll likely make transient friendships. my friends and i don't look for "random" people to get drunk/ stoned with and we don't go see "bad music." nice stereotyping.
-california ruined austin in the mid-80's? yeah, right. i would venture to say that the percentage of Texans living in austin compared to the percentage living in houston are similar if not greater. (i'm a seventh generation Texan, myself.)
-austin IS a sprawling city as well. the entire city is not "quaint." if you consider the surrounding regions (like folks do when they consider houston) austin is just as sprawling "per capita" as houston. head north on either 183 or IH 35 or head south on 35 if you don't believe me.

sorry. just had to throw in my .02

(i also feel people misjudge houston. i just don't feel the need to support that feeling on this board. i'm sure most folks in here are aware...;) )

I was born and raised in Houston but lived in Austin for college. Here are my reasons why I loved Austin: Trudy's, 6th Street, you can walk in any place wearing sandals and short and not be judged, the water, hills (2222 and 360 area) is simply gorgeous, concerts, UT is there, good school districts, etc.

I really do like Houston though for the Chinese food in the Bellaire area, pro teams, more clubs, bars, and restaurants to choose from, my family is here, good jobs, traffic isn't THAT bad, cheap to live, etc.

All in all, we can agree that Dallas is the worse place in Texas to live and that's all that matters. I love Houston and Austin.

There are two major cities in Texas: Houston and Dallas. Austin is a "AAA city", as in the minor league baseball level. Severly reduced job opportunities, shopping, nice restaurants, airline service (no major hub - very important), museums, etc. There's also much, much less diversity in Austin than Houston.

...but they still have the heat and traffic.

Totally agree...it has a nice small town feel with a good portion of major city attractions.

Funny, I was thinking I encounter the Houston vs Austin talk most on this board which is understandable considering you have a lot of people who have lived both places for extended periods of time. Dallas, on the other hand, just sucks.

I like Houston and Austin, I just prefer to live in Austin to raise my family.

I also like the clean air, and lower humidity in Austin....

I love to visit Austin and do several times a year but I'm always glad to come home. The music is better, the golf is better and West Austin in by far and away prettier; but for some reason I always feel claustrophobic after I've been there a couple days.

I like my flat sterile subdivisions, sports radio and wide open beltways running at 80 mph. And, I want to be able to make a dam left turn without having to drive all the way across town first.

    Ehh... you got me there.

Don't get me wrong, since I moved back to Houston my appreciation for my hometown has risen once again.

But it just doesn't have that cozy, homey, comfy vibe that I get whenever I'm driving around or walking through Austin.

Too much sprawl and pollution here. Plus I feel the people are overall more attractive and friendlier in Austin.

That fact is that Houston AND Austin both suck donkey balls compared to the beautiful suburban paradise that is TEXAS CITY, TX

    Among Texas City's wonderful features

A mall (4 bucks for a regular show and 2 bucks for a matinee at the theater)

diverse food with four Chinese restaurants, seven Mexican restaurants, AND an Olive Garden

Wal Mart Supercenter and a dog track (technically, both of these are in La Marque, but that dump is really just a suburb of TC, anyways)

The longest man made dike in the world

...and talk about a safe place to raise your children...There's a major explosion in Texas City ONLY about once every 60 years or so.

There's really no other choice, to tell you the truth...
