the Hoggs will regret how hard they made life for this dude, texas a&m could have waited on this guy. link Houston Nutt, the second-longest tenured football coach in the Southeastern Conference, will not be back at Arkansas next season, sources told ESPN.com on Monday. Was Houston Nutt treated fairly by Arkansas? Yes No Nutt, second only to the legendary Frank Broyles in victories as Razorbacks coach, will announce his resignation at a news conference scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, a source involved in the talks said Monday. Arkansas concluded an 8-4 season Friday with a 50-48, triple-overtime upset of then-No. 1 LSU, and chancellor John A. White responded by offering Nutt an annual salary of $2.4 million annually to remain coach. However, Razorbacks supporters have been split in their opinion of Nutt since the controversy over the coach's recruiting and use of local stars Mitch Mustain and Damian Williams, the quarterback and wide receiver who transferred to USC after the 2006 season. Not only that, but an Arkansas fan acquired Nutt's cell-phone records through the Freedom of Information Act. Though support for Nutt has surged since the Razorbacks' upset win Friday in Baton Rouge, Nutt believes the university community won't unite as long as he is the coach, the source told ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel. Nutt's agent, Jimmy Sexton, and the university administration spent Monday afternoon negotiating how much Nutt will receive of the $3.4 million in annuities due to him in 2009. Nutt will leave Arkansas with a 10-year record of 75-48 (.610) and three SEC West championships, including two trips to the conference championship game. He is expected to be a candidate for at least three jobs currently open: Baylor, SMU and Ole Miss. Nutt, White and Broyles, the outgoing athletic director, will be on hand at tonight's news conference. Nutt, who led the Razorbacks to two SEC championship game appearances, will receive a settlement in the neighborhood of $3.5 million.
With the mess last year, this isn't surprising. They would have had to won the SEC and played in a BCS game to save him. Since that ain't happening, it's easy to let him go. I'm not sure they're going to be able to do much better, though.
they didn't fire him or ask him to resign. he left on his own, albeit because of the circumstances you site
because he's a good coach. I think he won just as about as much as you can in arkansas playing in the sec although a couple of conference championships would have been nice
I thought this thread was going to be about some city-wide event... oh well, looks like i got excited for nothing.
He was a good coach but he could have done better. Pretty sad when you are the only big name school in your state and in probably the best conference in the country and you cannot keep your high school All Americans in-state. While his regular season record was pretty good at 73-48, his other achievements were lacking. 0-3 in the SEC Championship Games, 2-5 in bowl games and 4-6 against rival LSU. His plays were often simplistic and he often interfered when he should not have and left situations alone when he should have interfered. I think it was time for a change myself the only problem is, what coach is out there that will outperform him. I really wish UA could retain McFadden and Jones for another year but I know I am dreaming. LOL!
Boy I tell you what, I'm gonna regret losing him! He was an outstanding man of character and was the head of a fine Christian family (his own words) and coached us up to two conference championship games, one of which was due to the fact that the true division champ was on probation, including a stellar 2-6 bowl record, a 42-38 SEC record (which is bolstered by a 14-3 record against Ole Miss and Miss State, and a 7-3 record against South Carolina), the fact that he encouraged former players to be abused, his wife expressed the desire to take part in a brutal beating of a player's mother with 2x4 pieces of wood that hospitalized her, and coached us poor hicks up to a stellar 8-4 record with one of the greatest backfields in NCAA football history. You're right, he's a god damn genius and we should bow down to a man that can coach us up to that stellar THREE WAY TIE FOR THIRD PLACE IN THE SEC WEST WITH FELIX JONES AND DARREN MCFADDEN, including one of the best fullbacks in the business. You're right, he's a brilliant football mind. I mean, WHO ELSE could coach up that backfield to an 8-4 season, including wins over FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL, UT CHATTANOOGA, NORTH TEXAS, TROY, OLE MISS, MISS STATE, and SOUTH CAROLINA. Whoopty damn do, Arkansas pulled off an irrelevant upset over LSU to pull into that THREE WAY TIE FOR THIRD PLACE IN THE DIVISION -- let me go **** my cousin, because, afterall, you know, it's Arkansas...That's what we do, **** our cousins, and fire our all time living legend coach, Houston Nutt. Why don't you look up some of the facts about Houston Nutt before you run your mouth. I can't believe we just got rid of a coach that has been blown out in a bowl game by UNLV and dominated by Minnesota in another bowl game. I mean he's coached us up to wins over Texas in the Cotton and Missouri in the highly prestigious INDEPENDENCE BOWL. HELLO SHREVEPORT, that's where I wanna spend my vacation! it's a destination among destination cities in the United States!!!! Excuse me for being disappointed with a tie for 3rd place in the division with arguably the most talented team in Arkansas history
Let's see Briles is looking at Baylor (perhaps as a negotiating ploy) ..He's done a great job,but..... How about UH stepping up and forking over the dough for this guy?
I think Hogs fans have unrealistic expectations. Who cares if they are the biggest school in their very tiny state. Being in the SEC puts them at a big competitive disadvantage. I bet their next coach is worse. Why would anyone want to coach at Arkansas? It's a guaranteed ticket to mediocrity in the SEC or worse.
Dude coaches in a conference that has produced 3 national champions in his tenure I believe, not including an undefeated auburn team a few years ago. its tough to win in that conference, especially at arkansas.
Guess what? Reports have Houston Nutt taking the job at Ole Miss. http://kait8.com/Global/story.asp?S=7413981
I'm going to put it to you like this, if mack brown retired and ut hired houston nutt, i would be happy. not surprised he has another job, he wasn't secure at ark so he was just probably keeping his options open.
