I give blood a few times a year and was trying to give blood today and they turned me down since I recently was travelling in Asia. I was thinking that it might've been since I was in Sri Lanka but apparently the Hong Kong area has been listed as a malaria area. This is first I've ever heard of this and I've been too Hong Kong several times and have given blood without problem.

Have any of the Chinese or frequent travellers on CF.net heard of this before?

There is no Malaria in Hong Kong. Perhaps they are worried about bird flu or something?

    From the C.D.C.

Travelers to some areas in China, North Korea, and South Korea may be at risk for malaria. Travelers to malaria-risk areas in China, North Korea, and South Korea should take an antimalarial drug.
    ...
There is no risk of malaria in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong S.A.R. (China), Macau S.A.R. (China), and Mongolia.

^ Thanks for the info Otto. Malaria in Hong Kong didn't sound right to me, especially in January. Oh well I can't donate for a year though...
