Ok guys, I've decided to finally trash my minishelf system I've been using since college and upgrade a little.

I've been mulling over several choices. I can't afford anything high-end yet, just looking for an upgrade. I'll be watching dvd's, but I will also be hooking up a turntable and other side items (laptop,xbox,ect)...

I've done hours of research looking through pages of reviews and opinions and have narrowed my search down to these two...

    Panasonic Ht-900

    Sony DAV c770

Any audiophiles out there recommend one over the other?

Id go with the Sony. I think its a better brand and it appears to have better output per channel.

What is the best price you have found on each??

The Pioneer HTP-725DV is the system I recently got and have been VERY happy with it! The performance has been great. The sounds is amazing! The subwoofer is self amplified which brings in tremendous bass sound and the speakers even though they are small deliver a wide range of powerful sounds.

Here is a link detailing it:

It is a 6.1 system. Most systems are 5.1. Great sound!

Here is a USA Today article about 6.1 systems and this Pioneer System is specifically mentioned.

FYI, I did look at that Sony that you have mentioned up there. According to the comments on Crutchfield there seemed to be problems with the Captioning system where the captions during movies would come on inexplicably. I like Sony in general but I saw mixed reviews on that system in general.

Agreed! Crutchfield is a great "resource" to research stuff but I would not buy from them because you can go cheaper. I actually bought my Home Theater system at B&H. The same place you list in your link. No problems with them whatsoever and got a great price! I saved $200 on it!

www.streetprices.com is a great pricing source too.

All you do is type in the model you are looking for and the website finds the best price for you.

They have that Panasonic system listed at $400 and the Sony listed at $425.

Maybe I should start playing scratch-offs. Anybody ever won any of those?

I started with an all in one system, but find much more satisfaction in my pieced together system. Of course it's probably not a fair comparison since my new subwoofer costs more than my "HT in a box" system did. It's worth it though if you enjoy real bass :)

Make sure you get something that will last you. I needed something that could switch multiple component video and digital audio sources (important when you're juggling a GC, Xbox, PS2, DVD, etc). Being able to add the 6th channel for DTS-ES and DD EX soundtracks is a nice bonus also.

Oh yeah, www.audioreview.com has tons of consumer reviews. They might have HTIB reviews as well.
