Research at TAMU is great. I'm learning a lot even as an undergrad.

Now we can throw away the rubber, and have all the sex we want without getting the AIDS.

If they have high profit margin drugs that are already on the market, they are cannibalizing future sales of higher margin drugs for the HIV market. Some companies don't want to spend the $300+ million to destroy sales of their other products only to make a product that has the same profit margin.

They could hold off on bringing a drug to market until their patents about to expire and generic drugmakers start eating away at their profits for those drugs.

They run the risk of another drug company taking advantage. The average drug takes 10 years to pass FDA testing (in this case that's a couple thousand deaths). No company is going to wait past that to put a drug on the market.

The Japanese have endured so many hardships (especially this past year) and have always overcome. Please show some respect.

I agree. Some companies make some silly decisions. It reminds me of the music's industry's slow move away from CDs. If they had invested the millions in digital downloads, file sharing protection over lawyers, then they would have moved that much faster to Itunes and controlling the material.

I thought this was the GOP's idea to eliminate AIDS by herding HIV positive citizens into a compound for killing.

    Glad I was wrong.

How much do y'all think the job offers for the graduate research staff behind big breakthroughs like these is? What about the lead researcher -- the I.C. and eventual patent belong to the university right? I'm thinking $300k. Whereas some upper level pharmaceutical peddler gets $500k a year off the find. Any ideas?

The money isn't in curing the disease the money is in keeping the person with the disease alive for 18 to 25 years with before they dies. Thats why these things never take off.
