So I got Comcast...yay....and since I moved into my townhome complex I noticed that Roadrunner isn't as fast as when I was living at home...but I could deal with that.... But now, I'm getting really pissed because I haven't been able to play Halo on Live that much because every time I play it seems, I start to lag really bad and miss whole games. So if you've played w/ me and noticed that I was sucking...that's why In any case what are my options? I thought about yelling at Comcast and demanding they check the cables running into the complex...I'm kind of thinking they might be old....But what about a new router or an amplifier? I tried to connect to Live directly through my cable modem instead of running through the router and I noticed a difference (though I played only once before switching to the Texans game). But would a new, better router provide a faster speed (I know a router weakens the signal) cause as of now I have just a wireless B. Or would an amp do any good? I know it's probably not the cable modem. Please help! I want to play me some Halo!
a router should not affect your speed unless it's completely sh!tty or just flat-out broken or unless you've got some kind of firewall/limiter option set in it
Check your router see if you have any type of limit set on it. update it's firmware. if you still notice a significant difference between not using and using it, then you probably have to get a new router.
Well I use the router for my PC, Wii and Xbox...and just to see if it did anything I took out the router and hooked the xbox up to the modem direct...and it did seem better...but that could be fleeting since I only tried it for one game...so I guess my best option would be to yell at Comcast and demand they provide me the service I'm paying 50 bucks for? I could get DSL...but that'd probably be slower than what Roadrunner is supposed to be right?
The easiest way to do this is actually do a speed test on your computer with http://www.dslreports.com/stest , do it once with router in the middle and another time with your pc connected directly to the modem. See if there's a significant difference. Yelling at comcast won't do you any good since they charge you bunch money to do a service call now. isn't natural monopoly great?
depends which level service DSL you get...the basic residential one is 1.5megabits down, which is slower than comcast cablemodem. however, there is a 6megabit down DSL tier, which is a lot faster than cable
The first was directly connected to the modem: 168 download The second time was with the router: got 104, 117, 130, 117, 65 ...none were close to the dl speed w/o the router. Is that difference significant enough to suggest I need a new router...or is that type of drop normal?
uuh Im not real sure that is correct...my down speed before Comcast was 6M, adn it is faster now (havent run a test, I can tell in download times)
168kb per sec?? that's unusually slow. you should contact comcast. your speed should be at least close to 3 or 4 mb.
And its been like this since I moved in here...but I didn't really notice it too much until I've started playing Live this past week...I've been meaning to call Comcast but I was never too bothered by it until now.
For comparison - cable at my house through earthlink/comcast... Speed Test #37975484 by dslreports.com Run: 2007-10-07 16:24:18 EST Download: 7949 (Kbps) Upload: 315 (Kbps) In kilobytes per second: 970.3 down 38.4 up Boost: 8212 Latency: 74 ms Tested by server: 12 flash User: anonymous User's DNS: mindspring.com Compared to the average of 183 tests from mindspring.com: * download is 92% better, upload is 21% worse
btw...Ive seen it said that Comcast will charge for *any* service call, that makes no sense. Im pretty sure that if they come out and find a problem with their lines, you dont get charged the service call. You only get charged if the problem is with your lines/connections. so before you call them, make sure all your lines and connections are good(and are using RG6 cable) run the speed test again with just your computer hooked to the cable modem.
I called about a week ago and the Comcast representative on the phone told me if they come to your home and find there is no problem with your line that they will charge you for the service call. On the plus side, I was able to collect a $20 credit since Comcast didn't arrive at time. I had an appt. between 11AM-2PM, and they showed up at 5PM. So I called an got my credit. This is the second credit I've been able to receive in less than a month, since I had another problem with service and they also arrived late. So make sure to stick it to Comcast if they don't arrive on time. Its called the "On time Guarantee" if you want to reference it on the phone. I've had problems with weak signal in my area due to extra long cables coming into my house. They installed an signal amplifier which seemed to solve the problem.
Download: 7949 (Kbps) Upload: 315 (Kbps) In kilobytes per second: 970.3 down 38.4 up See how Comcast false advertises their ass off. I pay $60 p/m and I get 1000KB download when I should be getting 8MB.
the difference between Kilobits and Kilobytes is more than likely what the difference is. too frequently they get interchanged when talking about speeds.
nothing can be faster than this comcast with POWERBOOST stuff im running at Download Speed: 21897 kbps (2737.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 2134 kbps (266.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
lol, you know how POWERBOOST works right? it's only a very short temporary burst of initial speed and you know the entire reason they have it? it's to SKEW the speed tests that everyone on the internet runs to 'gauge' their speed...and apparently it does a good job at fooling people with it, lol and as for the other post, yeah some of you need to study the difference between 'bits' and 'bytes'... there's a big difference
Well, speed tests aside, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that my connection isn't as fast as it should be. I noticed the difference the second I moved from my mother's house to my townhome (and I have the same setup, aside from a different modem). You know something's up when you're playing Halo 3 online and it takes a good 3-5minutes before you respawn. I'm calling Comcast today....I just have this feeling that the signal coming into the complex or into the townhome is weak...if they're unwilling to fix it, I might just try DSL...it couldn't be any worse...could it?
