The #4 nationally ranked Katy Tigers start off with Vengeance's old stomping grounds Strake Jesuit. If they don't win it all this year, it'll be a huge disappointment. Have a soft spot in my heart for the Mayde Creek Rams who are making their first appearance in a long while. A couple of close friends coach and/or teach their, so I've been following them pretty closely. They start off with Cy Falls (who beat Katy last year) Saturday night at Rhodes. I fully expect this thread to devolve into a flame war of sorts since that seems to be the state of the BBS these days, so yay.
Katy's ranked #4 nationally? Holy crap... You gotta give credit to a program that rarely has superathletic stars yet consistently wins year in and year out. I wasn't too into the football team when I went there, but watching the Tigers beat SL Carroll and end their massive winning streak at the Alamodome in '04 was something I'll never forget. There were huge amounts of red and white shirts on the Riverwalk that night.
That was such an amazing game. That school would've had close to a 90 game-winning streak had it not been for that defeat.
Because Odessa Permian (10-0) is in Division I and Southlake Carroll and Katy are both in Division II, I really do think Permian can win it all this year. Their biggest test will be Euless Trinity in the Regionals, who they whipped on national television earlier this year. Since that game, ET hasn't allowed more than 10 points to any opponent and they will be looking for big time revenge against the team that kept them from another undefeated season. Whoever wins that game will win the Division I State Championship IMO. GO MOJO
There are a LOT of teams in the playoffs with losing records (including several at 3-7). It was pretty stupid to take 3 teams from every district. Can we just scrap this Division I/Division II nonsense and just have one divison? Do we really need 128 5-A teams in the playoffs??
Yep. In Katy's district, I think all but two teams had a shot to make the playoffs going into the last weekend.
WOW, Katy is still that good huh? I know when I was there football was everything to the school, it's good to see they are still doing well..
Indeed. Including my 4-6 Elsik Rams. Playoff Bound again! The problem with looking at overall records is that some teams choose to play easy out of conference schedules. Looking at district records (where Elsik was 4-3) is the easiest way to compare teams from within each district. You play every other team in your district so nobody has an easier schedule.
The classifications are divided into two divisions for the playoffs. The two playoff teams with the highest enrollement in the district go to division 1 while the other two go to division 2.
I guess I can pull for both Woodlands teams since their in different divisions. I didn't go to either one (went to McCullough...which is now a jr. high), but I suppose I can still pull for my hometown. Right? As long as Conroe loses, it's all good.
5A (you do know 5A, right? ) has two separate playoff brackets - Division I and Division II. District champion goes to DI. Not sure about runner-up and the rest. There are always two 5A state champions. Edit - RM95 beat me to it. My explanation was wrong anyways.
It's based on enrollment, not who won the district. I think all classifications have two divisions now.
