The New York Mets acquired Richard Hidalgo from the Houston Astros in exchange for David Weathers on Thursday, according to the New York Daily News. The Mets are expected to buy out Hidalgo's 2005 option at season's end, making this a rental for the remainder of the season.
works for me. He gave us 1 great year, 1 good year and a couple of mediocre. I'll miss his arm out in right but clearly his time with us was up. Let's see what Jason Lane can do
Agreed... it was time to see what Lane could do, and it was pretty clear that Hidalgo wasn't going to put a whole season together. He could still turn it around, but this team needs production in the worst way. (I kinda wish we were done with the Mets, because a focused Hidalgo is VERY dangerous.) Weathers isn't anything special, but he's more reliable than Harville (who will be good one day), Bullinger, Gallo, and Stone. He'll be right behind Miceli as far as the pecking order goes...
Weathers can pitch...he's no sure fire thing everytime out...but he brings a lot of experience with him and hopefully some outs
No more Doggy. Best of luck to him. Next order of business is giving Weathers a nickname. How about, "Rain Man". They should play some audio of lighting and thunder when he comes in the game.
Doggy had zero trade value because of his contract. He's due $14 million next season, which is ludicrous.
This is bitter-sweet .. I was ready for this team to make a change if for nothing other than to change the mindset in the clubhouse and now we don't have to deal with Doggy's contract. I just have a terrible feeling that Doggy is going to come back and haunt us some day.
Hidalgo trade talks with Mets continue By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle The Astros are in discussions with the Mets about a trade that would send right fielder Richard Hidalgo, who lost his starting spot in May, to New York for reliever David Weathers, industry sources say. The talks are continuing this morning. The Astros would not confirm or deny a report today on the New York Daily News Web site that the deal has been finalized. Weathers, 34, has a 5-3 record with a 4.28 ERA. Weathers, a 14-year veteran, is earning $3,93 million this season. Hidalgo, who has been on the trading block for two years, is earning $12 million this year. Hidalgo, 28, would be owed a $2 million buyout if his $15 million option is not picked up for next season. Weathers has given up 41 hits and 19 runs over 34 innings in 32 games. Hidalgo has slumped to a .256 average with four home runs and 30 RBIs.
Was this really a good deal? Do you think Hidalgo would have improved later on this season? Is Weathers a good fit to this team? I thought we could get more out of the trade.
i think the deal was more about getting rid of doggy then acquiring weathers (yes, call me capt obvious)...so anything positive that comes form weathers is gravy
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1823843 according to ESPN we also threw in $4 million to help offset the contracts. I am fine with this trade as long as Weathers can actually provide some worthwhile innings in the pen.
If my math is correct this frees up a prorated $4million for the Astros to work with for other trades. Awesome. Weathers kinds stinks, but hes better than Stone and we need someone to take innings from Micelli before his arm falls off.
Gerry has been high on Weathers for a few years, tried to get him from Milw before. Hopefully he pitches better than he has with the damn Mets. Good luck to Reeshard, hope he turns his career around. I always liked watching him, played hard every day. Stros need a 5th OF now, I'd expect Jimerson or Taveras to be called up, almost exclusively for defensive purposes. There's not much in NO that can help. btw: 'Stros saved about $3.5M with the deal.
Buck, Id be shocked (and disappointed) if they bring Tavares or Jimerson up to be a backup. Don't you think that could r****d their development?? My guess is either Phil Hiatt (17 HRS this year) or Ryan Thompson.
I dunno, cod. Their OF corps now consists of a converted C/2B (Biggio), a converted 1B (Berkman), a rookie who's best position may be 1B (Lane), a journeyman (Palmeiro) and a AAA infielder (Bruntlett). Hiatt's a LF/1B type, and I don't think Thompson has done squat this season, don't know if he can play CF either. Taveras/Jimerson could learn a good bit working with Jimy every day. And they're both perfect defensive-replacement types. But yeah, I'd rather leave 'em down there, but they may be the best options available.
