I agree with you that Ty Hill doesn't shoot 3s but do you really think that is a bad thing? Instead of chucking up the long ball, he can cut to the basket and get easy dunks. His stats may not be great but he does all the little things needed to win game (defense, loose balls, screens, rebounds etc.)

I am astonished that you actually think teams are worried about leaving Eddie opened for the wide opened 3  As of now, every 3 Eddie shoots is essentially 1/2 of a turnover. I can see your logic that having a 3 point shooter will give Yao more spacing BUT that only applies if that shooter is able to make it consistantly (Ray Allen, Nash, Reggie Miller). Not a PF who chucks up knuckle balls all day.

A lot of people here want a banger PF. I like a banger PF too, but as a backup. There's a problem with playing a banger without range alongside with Yao. It simply clogs up the middle. People are double teaming Yao without the ball now. A power forward that cannot draw his man out is useless on offense with Yao. That's why I don't see Griffin shooting 3s is necessarily a bad thing. He just needs to MAKE his shots (2-pointers or 3-pointers), period. His problem is not shooting too many 3s. It's the inconsistency of his shot that's bad.

I don't understand how a PF who can't shoot things is a bad thing. Yao gets the ball in the block, the PF is on the other block instead of at the 3 point line I guess. The PF's man comes over to double, you have a wide open PF that Yao would get the ball to for sure. Or the defense has rotated and you have a wide open man at the three point line. What's more, instead of having Griffin, a good rebounder, at the 3 point line, you have a PF close to the basket in position to get offensive boards when Yao is doubled. Finally, I'd almost rather have Yao being doubled by anotehr post defender, instead of a pesky guard, as he is taller than everyone anyway and the guards are much better at stripping the ball.

If the Rockets wanted to deploy a lineup with a power forward that was a tough rebounder next to Yao they don't need Hill to do it, they can just stick Cato in there. The reason WHY they don't do it much at all is that offensively he is a liability as his man will double over on Yao. The Rockets have to keep teams honest and our power forward needs to have SOME range and some semblance of an offensive game.

    JayZ,

The PF doesn't have to shoot the three. But he needs to be able to knock down an outside shot (15 ft and out) for the defense to respect the spacing. It's a lot easier to recover from the double team if your man is close by on the other side of the block than if he is out on the wing.

About offensive rebounding, there is enough time to come in from the wing to get offensive rebounds when your center starts the motion of shooting. (BTW, it's also a good time for the center to hit you for a wide open dunk when you are cutting to the basket for the offensive rebound because your man is probably going to commit to the double team when the center is moving to shoot.)

Also, two players operating at the post together inhibits guard penetrations. Again, spacing works only if the defense respects your outside shooting.

Griffin shoots 34% from the arc. That is 3% lower than the designated 3pt specialist Glen Rice. If a player makes 1 of 3 3pt shots he scores the same total points as a player who shoots 50% of 2pt shots. (2 of 6 3pt shots = 3 of 6 2pt shots). Teams honor Rice and he is shooting terribly (for him). We have a guarantee that they will not honor Hill.

Secondly, IMHO as a "specialist" Ty Hill will not get enough playing time to be of any significant impact to either help the Rockets make the playoffs or get out of the 1st round.

If EG & MoT split the time 20-20, that leaves Hill 8 minutes to make an impact as rebounder. He doesn't score much and he doesn't block shots. He is no where near the player Najera is and Najera needs 21 mpg to be an impact. Simply stated, there aren't enough minutes for him to be an impact and any minutes he gets will less time for EG and MoT.

Quite frequently this board gets infatuated with players and they become the "flavor du jour" The Rox are weak A so we need player A, tomorrow the Rox are weak at B and player B becomes the flavor du jour.

I don't know if this is correct but I remember some article saying that Hill wasn't happy in CLE because he wasn't getting enough playing time because of the development of the young guys. I would have to guess that he felt that getting more mins would greatly be more important on that lottery team than young guys developing for the future. If this is correct than Hill is going to be even more mad here with Griffin and Mo and worse so will Mo and Griffin, they could lose their confidence even more just like when we had K. Thomas. Besides I'm also concerned about his off court problems. Barrowing money from other players to pay his gambling debt is not good, and even worse when you don't pay them back.

The absolute best reason why Hill won't get a 10 day contract from the Rox.

The Rocket PF are shooting a blistering 31.3% over the last 5 games, and a blistering 37.5% from the 3 point line. This includes from EG two games at 3-10, one at 3-11, one at 2-7, and his best of the pack at 5-13. Offensive player he is defnitely not. Maybe he stretches the defense, just maybe.

The real reason Cato doesn't play PF mroe foten is because doing so would require they learn it in practice and Rudy is notorious for not implementing things that don't work well initially in practice in games, such as setting a pick across the lane to free Yao up on the low block, which Rudy has claimed in 610 interviews, doesn;t work in practice.

This may sound dumb but....How the hell can Dallas just sign him? I have seen all of their bad contracts. They are way over the cap. It's not the offseason, so they don't have that exception crap. Is there somethimg in CBA that allows capped out teams to sign vets? Someone explain this to me plaese.

That's why the NBA has a "soft cap".

The NFL has a hard cap. You can't go over it, end of story.

The NBA has a soft cap. It's more of a "guideline" really. You can re-sign your own free agents for more than the cap space you have, the infamous "Larry Bird Rule". Those are called bird rights. A team can sign another team's free agents only if they have the cap space available to do so. This helps minimize player movement. If a team is over the salary cap, they pay a luxury tax, which I THINK is dollar for dollar, though don't quote me on that...

Of course, Hill automatically gets the vet mimimum of $1,000,000, which will be pro-rated for any team that signs him...

    confused yet? :D

Don't ignore the fact that Hill might prefer Dallas not just because of the money, but because they're in serious contention for a ring.

No one realistically thinks Houston is, this year. (Although I do have $10 riding on it!)

    Off-topic,

Anybody knows if Chris Gatling has signed with anyone this season?

I'll take a shot at explaining it.

No team without $6m in cap room can sign Hill until he clears waivers. Once he clears waivers, he falls under the Matt Maloney rule where the new team is only liable for the minimum salary, both in terms of who pays the salary and what team's cap it falls under, hence why Maloney was/is on our cap, except for a vet minimum amount of the contract. The reason for this is because the league does not allow you to waive a player merely to get under the cap. You cannot do that. The player will still count against your cap, unless some other team picks him up "off of waivers" rather than after he "clears waivers."

The more interesting question to me is why does that article just assume he'll clear waivers? I guess no one with cap room wants to spend $6m on Hill?

wait a second, we're fretting over not signing tyrone hill?? has it gotten that bad? i mean i know our pf's suck but why bring in an average one to create the glut we got rid of? 6.3 pts/8.3 reb/43% shooting. hardly a huge upgrade to eddie's 8.6 pts/6.3 reb/1.7 blks/39%. and just b/c he doesn't hang out at the 3 pt line doesn't mean he can magically cut to the basket now b/c his defender will never not be in the paint waiting for him. maybe putting him at the 3 pt line would cause the D to laugh so hard we could score then, otherwise i don't see anything he does for the O. if he's the tyrone hill i remember from the finals two years ago, his shot makes eddie's look like a work of art. i assume the only reason he's at 43% is b/c he only shoots really close shots like layups/dunks which means he's in the lane which means he's in yao's way. ty hill ain't solving none of our problems imho.

plus he would increase the ugly factor of our team by at least 10. although i suppose we would then be too distracted to complain about how ugly our uniforms are.
