Looks like Herseth hung on to win in ND...

In special House elections this year, the Dems are 2-0 with big wins in GOP leaning districts (KY and ND).

Plus, she's a babe... (for a Member of Congress).

I saw that. Another small step forward for the Democratic Party. Look for more good news in November.

Get used to it, bama. The Bushies have shown the GOP up for what it is and the inevitable backlash is on the way.

I read somewhere that she is 33, but I don't remember where I read it.

And the Magic Number Is Now...
    By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG, NYTimes

After Texas redrew its political boundaries last year, the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives was buzzing with talk of big increases in their majority. But when Representative Tom Reynolds of New York, the chairman of the National Republican Campaign Committee, offered his outlook for 2004 on Wednesday, it did not include such expansive predictions.

"My goal," Mr. Reynolds said, "is to bring back 228 members of House Republicans next year."

That, as it happens, was the same number of Republicans in the House until Tuesday, when Stephanie Herseth, a Democrat, squeaked to victory in a special election in South Dakota, bringing it down to 227. When reporters expressed surprise that Mr. Reynolds was not predicting an even bigger majority, given the redistricting in Texas, he simply reiterated his stance. "My goal is to bring back 228," he said, adding, "I don't predict seats."

Mr. Reynolds might not have been feeling particularly good. In addition to Ms. Herseth's victory in South Dakota — a state that President Bush won in 2000 with 61 percent of the vote — another Democrat, Ben Chandler, won in a special election in February in Kentucky, also a Republican stronghold. Though Republicans say those losses do not have greater national significance for the coming elections in November, the fact that Mr. Reynolds was forecasting a status quo outcome could be telling.

Or perhaps Mr. Reynolds was simply worried about retirements. There have been several in the ranks of House Republicans, including moderate Representatives Jack Quinn and Amo Houghton Jr., both of New York. Asked if he had any strategies in his back pocket for preventing any more Republicans from leaving office, Mr. Reynolds got up from his seat and made a great show of looking in the cabinets in his committee's conference room.

Emerging empty-handed, he declared, "I've got an ax."

I don't think so, Andylib. I know you'd dance with joy with more of your ideological stripe in Washington, but I frankly like more economic freedom than less.

Despite your attempt to label me as a liberal, I still identify as an independant. I was once thinking of becoming a Libertarian, but you effectively convinced me otherwise.

I WOULD dance with joy if more of those of my political stripe were in Washington, but for the time being, it looks like the Dems and Reps will remain in power.

Besides, four more years of Bush will mean FAR less economic liberty than we have now. If you cannot see that, then you have willingly placed the blinders on your head.

Economic liberty means that I get to enjoy MORE of the fruits of my labor rather than seeing it redistributed to the non-producing leeches in society for the purpose of buying politicians votes. Love that blinders taunt you throw around. Be a man, Andylib. Admit what you are and all will be well. You're no more independent than the sky is green with purple polka-dots. You're firmly esconced with the left in this country. Just own up to it. If that's what you believe, fine. But don't be a coward and say "I'm an independent." It's like being a fan of Chevrolets but always buying Ford. You're living a lie.

Were I a liberal, I would shout it from the rooftops. My father is as liberal as they come and he taught be to be proud of what I am.

I would love to see the various "vote buying schemes" (pork barrel politics) go away tomorrow. The thing you seem to be willfully ignoring (thus proving my "blinders taunt") is that the GOP has been WORSE along those lines then the Dems have ever been. A vote for Bush is a vote for MORE Meicare prescription benefits, subsidies for industries in "battleground states," or corporate welfare for campaign contributors.

Based on your decision to vote for Bush despite all of this shows that you are no more a Libertarian than Rosie O'Donnell is a candidate for Miss Universe. You are the one living a lie. I am fiercely proud of being an independant and will continue to call ALL politicians, Dem or Rep, left or right, out for things taht are done to the detriment of this country. Make no mistake about it, YOU are the one fooling yourself. You should just hand that thing around your neck to your leash holders because you are becoming another t_j.
