I want to take my wife to Kemah for her birthday weekend. I have not been there in years. What are the nicer hotels and restaurants? Other things to do. I had in mind a nice dinner and sitting outdoors and watching - boats / water. any suggestions?
If you're going to the boardwalk, park in the garage. The lots ALWAYS fill up by 7:30 every evening. The garage is right there up front, and I've never had trouble finding a spot. Every resturant is owned by Tillman Fertitta, but the food is good, albeit expensive. I like Joe's laid back atmosphere, plus they have a huge outdoor patio for which there usually isn't a wait. Thursday nights they have freee music. The acts are usually pretty good. There also a juggler that is really good. He performs by the fountain. There's a stand that sells really good smoked turkey legs, also. Oh yeah, stop by the Pizza Oven for some of the best brick oven baked pizza ever.
I'm in Houston for my 10 year reunion...me and my folks are going to Kemah tomorrow for lunch...never been before...looking forward to it... MAN IS IT HOT
Another parking trick is to park to the west of the boardwalk on the other side of the little channel/boat lot. Go down the little street that Molly's and Ichibons is on, and park at the very end. They have a little free ferry boat you can take over to the boardwalk.
15 years ago I would have agreed with you. But i've been to the Flying Dutchman a couple of times recently and it has been quite underwhelming. The food was so-so and the interior was kind of shabby compared to how it used to be. I would say the nicest place out there now is the Aquarium.
Do you know if there are boats for hire? I don't want to drive it,or fish, but some kind of tour on the water. You know - looking at the dolphins or something. My elderly father in law may be with us and I'm looking for some tame entertainment. We can enjoy the fresh air while he sings"there ain't no bugs on me". How far is Seabrook from there? I recall a place- "Classic Cafe" from 1991. Very good breaded fried shrimp with almonds or cashews in the fried coated- breading. Thanks for the parking tips and restaurant tips.
The boardwalk has a speed boat called "The Beast" but it's real cheesy. They play real loud "party music" while you are out on it. I don't know of any others. Seabrook is on the way there if you take NASA road 1. Take old people to Tookies on 146 in Seabrook.
Seabrook is at the base of one side of the bridge, Kemah is on the other side. Tookies is a good suggestion. When you turn from NASA Road 1 onto 146, its on the left.
I prefer a smaller restraunt across the bridge in Kemah called the Sunset grill. Very quiet, right on the water, great food. Pappadeux is also good. The boardwalk just dosen't do much for me anymore.
Aquarium is overrated IMO. Nice view, but i've had better seafood at Joes. On the weekend, I might suggest doing valet parking at the Aquarium for $5. Sometimes it gets so packed you have to park on the other side of the marina.
Thanks. That's the kind of place I used to go to in the area, before Kemah became a theme park/monopoly, pretending to be Kemah.
Top water is good (in laws oyster business is right downt he street as well). Sunset is good as well. Boardwalk is a tourist trap.
I hope it's not too late to respond to this thread. I almost forgot about La Brisa, easily the best Tex-Mex I've ever had. It's not on the boardwalk, but a little South of Kemah in Bacliff. They have this dish that's a fajita steak covered with chorizo and melted cheese...oh man, my colon is already clogging up just thinking about it...
