Hey guys, One of my friends gave me an old iPhone with a cracked screen (8GB model, Model No. A1203), and although he told me it was unlocked and ready to use with T-Mobile, I decided to upgrade the software/firmware to v3.0 so I can have more functionality with it. Well, now that I have finished doing the software update through iTunes, the iPhone will no longer recognize my T-Mobile SIM card. So I guess what I need help with is unlocking it, preferably with a freeware (if there are any out there that are tested to work). TIA...
Post an email address and I can send out a guide. I don't know the policy as far as linking to it on the forums.
Hold on...this is a 2G or a 3G phone?! I am guessing this is the first iPhone there was? Well, after upgrading the firmware to 3.0 or whatever through iTunes, all I am getting is the following message from iTunes: "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported". Below that, it says only "compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone." On the iPhone itself, I can't navigate away from that screen with the iTunes logo and the USB plug picture, so it is pretty much locked the way it is. I am guessing my T-Mobile card won't unlock it any time soon. I don't know much of anything about the iPhone, so I will pretty much need a "step-by-step" guide to help unlock it. Meanwhile, it may be worth it to just revert back to v1.whatever that was installed/working just an hour ago.
Sent it to you. I tried sending through the board, but you have the email feature turned off. I am assuming you have the 2g iPhone, which has the silver backing. Stick with 3.0 and do not revert to a previous firmware. The phone is already locked so going back will not fix anything, but follow the guide and it should be fine.

Thanks Only one problem now that may seem simple but has confounded me so far: I can't power off/shut down the phone! In one of the steps, it says you have to turn it off, well I tried multiple times but it just won't do it. I tried the force shut down by pressing the sleep and home buttons for 5-10 seconds but to no avail. The screen still shows a usb cable going towards an itunes icon and then it says slide for emergency at the bottom, I guess that is because I did not finish the firmware update through iTunes. Unfortunately, I can't complete the installation/update because I don't have a valid SIM card. So it's kinda of a catch-22 at this point... Can I revert back to the previous version through iTunes? I can't find a way around the "insert a valid SIM card" message from the program.
If you hold the power button on top for a few seconds, you should see a "Slide to Power off" near the top of the screen.
i have a similar topic..but i can't start threads...and i shouldnt for this. i got the 3GS a month or so ago..I am locked into the contract now with ATT. kind of on purpose so I can keep the phone if i cancel the contract. Now what's the proper way/steps to take the phone to Tmobile?
Unlock, Jailbreak, then mod the internet proxy settings to work with Tmobile. It's all pretty straight forward if you google it. Hackintosh forums have info too. Phone mods are like computer repairs, if you don't know what you're doing, I wouldn't really recommend it. Not because it'll eff up your phone, but because it's a pretty long process. Set aside about 4-6 hours to do this with research, hacking, and testing. Pizza_da_hut in no way advocates hacking an iPhone. Do so at your own risk. well i asked here because i wasn't sure which sites to trust that i find on google. u know. i am all for modding stuff. ya the only thing thats holding me back is the warranty and that feeling of "this is where/how it's supposed to work" not ..i hacked and cracked and took it to an entirely diff network. haha
The beauty of YouTube is, that if it doesn't work, people will gladly vocalize it. http://gizmodo.com/5307693/iphone-3gs-unlocked-with-purplera1n-%2B-ultrasn0w Giz is really trustworthy, they are Mac users but oh well...
you will only be able to get that on the edge network on tmobile, it won't work on their 3g, only att's 3g. If you don't want to unlock/jailbreak it yourself there are a ton of people on craigslist that will do it. I just bought a 3g unlocked off craigslist and using on tmobile and its working great
I did not know that, that royally sucks.. AT&T isn't really as bad as people say. I personally love it.
