i havent been connected to my university network for almost a week. my mac/physical (ethernet adapter) address has changed to a wacky serial number eg 01 23 45 67 ....
i'm guessing this is the problem. can someone tell me why this happened and what i should do?

season starts in 2 days and i'm gonna have to follow it using my sucky lab comps.

dont you have any uni techs you can call?

in order to help you, I would need to know what type of network addressing scheme they use..what are their main protocols..

It sounds like you are talking about the MAC address of your nic.

MAC addresses are flat addresses in that they identify only the node with which they are associated and have no relationship to any other network elements. In many ways, MAC addresses are like Social Security numbers for NICs, identifying only one NIC at a time.
A MAC address consists of a 48-bit or 6-byte hexadecimal number. It's represented in the form of six two-digit numbers separated by dashes.

if they use TCP/IP as the main network protocol, then of course you should have an IP address consisting of 4 octets (ex: 192.168.112.200)

What uni are you at? they might have a page on the net describing the settings you need, I know a lot of the schools do it that way.

yup i'm talking about my mac address. before i was disconnected, my mac address seemed fine. now it just looks like a number in series 01-23-45-...... when i go to my ipconfig.
is this mac address some number assigned to my computer by the university or is it some sort of permanent number that has to do with my LAN card?
