Hey everyone. I don't know if anyone is looking to adopt a puppy, but I know of a great one that needs a home.

    Stats:

    Age: 6-8 months
Gender: Male (soon to be neutered)
    Breed: Long-haired german shepherd
    Color: Black with brown highlights
Health: Excellent - treated for mange, but now healthy - no heartworms and is on preventative treatment
Size: Now, appx 35lbs. Expected to be 90 to 100lbs fully grown
Disposition: Extremely sweet - doesn't bark (very quiet) but is a healthy active dog - has been gentle around kids and good with other dogs - chased our cats but it appeared to be just playful, no growling or anything. He will be a BIG dog, so that should be a consideration.
Situation: I found "Prince" on election day (November 6) at the corner of 610 and North Main (should be named "Harley" because it was in the parking lot of Mancuso Harley Davidson). I was working on the Mayor's campaign and he was out there looking sad with just a short rope around his neck.

He had pretty bad mange (not the contageous kind, just the skin condition) and I took him directly to the vet. He was very sweet and came right to me. My vet agreed to keep him and adopt him out for us, but they aren't really fully equipped to do that normally. They really just did it because my wife and I are good customers.

My wife and I kept him over Thanksgiving when the clinic was full of boarded animals and he was great on a leash, came when called and never cried or barked in the house. He stayed in our office bathroom at night and seemed to like the smaller space. Because we kept him in a small space, he did not use the bathroom indoors. Like many younger dogs, crate training would seem very appropriate for him. He liked the small space and he won't go to the bathroom that close to his bedding.

You can visit him at West Alabama Vet Clinic. They are located on West Alabama just east of the Shepherd on the north side of the street. Dr. Rosser is the vet there. She is a HUGE Rockets and Comets fan as well.

Please help us give him a home. If you can't take him, ask around for us. He needs a good home for Christmas. Email me if you have any questions.

I will never take another animal of mine to the West Alabama Animal Clinic. A few years ago, my then girlfriend and I adopted a kitten(Ripley) from there. They told us that when the time came around for her to be fixed, to just bring her in and they'd do it for free. We were thinking, great, these people are fantastic, but they had us pick up Ripley the same day. She was in no shape to be transported and had pooped on herself. I couldn't believe they wouldn't keep her overnight and would even give her back in that condition! From that point on all of my pets have gone to Dr. Frye at Southside Place Animal Hospital. The whole staff there is just great.

I will never take my pets to the PET VET on I-10 near the Heights...

We took my dog in to get spayed, and picked her up the same day... of course she was sore, groggy, not feeling good and had a real hard time walking... oh and the floors were shined to a glossy finish, so it made it hard for her to walk, not to mention she just had a major surgery...

When they brought Jane out, she couldn't walk, kept slipping on the floor and was slightly wimpering... the stupid vet techs said this... "oh, she's looking for sympathy!"

argh... i was so pissed.
i promised myself never to go back and haven't.

Jeff, I've always, ALWAYS loved the German Shepard breed. However, I just spoke with the wife and she's quite adament about us not needing a second dog. Maybe if you could post a picture of the dog (with sad puppy dog eyes, of course) it will help convince her.

    Behad,

The dog is fantastic. I just went to visit Prince.

Good news is that Prince looks like he has peaked in size. That is what they are saying. They've had him for quite awhile, and he hasn't grown. I'd say he is 40lbs, maybe less, like Jeff says.

Good news is that Prince loves other dogs....I took mine.

Good news is that Prince is attentive, quiet, and wants to be well-behaved. He is a natural!!!. You could probably teach this dog pretty much anything.

Bad news is that I might beat everyone on the bbs to get this dog. My Mollie is 13 yrs old and needs a puppy companion. They got along schmashingly. I'm definitely thinking about it. It is up to the landlord, though.

    crispee: You rule.

RocketsPimp: I understand how you feel. We've had ups and downs with W. Alabama. In general, they've been fine. I won't say that my wife and I haven't considered our options, but, generally, we've been satisfied.

I will say this, if an animal of mine ever has a serious illness, I wouldn't go there first. I would go immediately to Gulf Coast Animal Hospital off of 610. They are THE BEST in the city even if they are expensive. They are tremendous at diagnosis and very friendly. I couldn't afford them for everyday use, but in an emergency, it's the only place I would go.

    Cool....

I have been looking for a dog. I will be moving to a house at the End of the month and there is a huge backyard which would be perfect for a dog. Ive always loved a German Shepard's.

    Hey Jeff:

Is the Clinic open on the weekend? I will be in Houston for the weekend to see the Heat game, and maybe I could swing by and look at the dog (If Crispee doesnt get it first :D )

    Drew,

Let me know what you want to do. I already have a dog, so if you want Prince ...

But let me know. Maybe I can take him in then give him to you after you move into your house. Then again, I haven't got all my OKs, yet. I need Mrs. Jeff to help me give heyschweetie the sell.

    I'll do my best ... :)

Prince is a very sweet dog. He stayed with us (in our office) over the Thanksgiving holiday and I got to spend a lot of time with him. He's fun to take for walks and is very affectionate. I think one of his best traits (especially for us inner loop dwellers who live in close quarters) is that he almost never barks.

Both Jeff and I are big-time animal lovers and we would likely keep him if we didn't already have such an obscene number of cats.

He'd probably be a great pal for Mollie. Dogs are very social animals so it can be hard when there's just one and they have to be alone for any stretch of time.

Here's my personal story about dog companions: Grover was my family dog from the time I was 3 until I was 17. When he got to be about 12 or so, his health started to decline and he seemed to become depressed.

One day my dad came home with a cocker spaniel puppy named Spenser. At first I was angry because I thought my dad was trying to replace my beloved dog. But as the weeks passed, I realized that Spenser had an almost rejuvinating effect on Grover who was now running and playing in the yard with the little puppy.

Grover and Spenser became good friends, and Grover ended up living two more happy years. Plus, his passing was made easier by the fact that we now had Spenser as part of the family.

Hope that helps both of you with your decision.
