Anyone know of any reasonably priced HD DVD players? I have a Phillips dvd player with an HDMI output so I bought Planet Earth HD and it won't play the discs.

The Toshiba HD-A2 (soon to be replaced by the HD-A3) was $210 with 8 free movies on Amazon a little while back. Looks like its $238 with 7 movies now.

Be careful though....the new Toshiba player is about $300, but it doesn't do 1080p....only up to 1080i.

Depending on the TV he's got, 1080i might be enough.

Why wouldn't the new Toshiba player not support the highest output? Does the HD-A2 support 1080i?

The HD-A2's max output 1080i. Toshiba's more expensive models output 1080p. I think I read that some people get better picture on their 1080p sets when they set their Toshiba HD DVD players to output 1080i because of some sort of bug. Honestly, even if you do have a decent TV, you probably won't even be able to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

The HD-A3 that's coming out (might already be available on some online stores) will include 300 and the Bourne Identity, and be eligible for a new 5 free movie rebate that has some different selections than the current rebate. It will also be 1080i max.
