Just curious. This is anonymous. In the last 10 years, how many times have you (or your "nuclear" family) been admitted to the hospital

Had to take the kids into the emergency room a few times, but as far as being admitted and staying a night... twice.

While this is an unscientific poll and a small sample, I am surprised at the results. I would expect more ZEROes.

Leaping off the other healthcare thread(s), I'm trying to get a feel for what percentage of people likely exceed the Deductible on their health plan.

I too am surprised. In America, if you've been hospitalized, your chances of going bankrupt skyrocket, so I don't know how all y'all can afford your internet link.

edit: giddy, I assume you don't mean my parents but me and my wife (and kids if we had 'em), right?

Yes. The poll question has a limit on the number of characters so I did the best I could. What I am really getting at is the number of hospitalizations "under one health plan."

Okay, thanks. Mrs B-Bob and I are each through a different plan (via our jobs), but we are incredibly lucky to never have stayed overnight in a hospital.

Each have had emergency room visits, and she even had outpatient surgery, but I don't think those qualify as "hospitalization." And now I will go knock on wood!

Old geezers like me (+55) are screwing up the pool for your poll. :)

I have been to the hospital several times due to martial arts injuries thankfully not having to stay overnight. I have exceeded my deductible a few times and even with a $1,500 deductible it only takes about 3 visits with X-rays to exceed it. My mom has been hospitalized a couple of times but has not gone bankrupt probably because she was hospitalized in Singapore and not here.

My son spent almost 7 weeks in the NICU. He had surgery at about 3 months and was admitted for having an intestinal infection at about 6 months. (Total bill of 400K)

My daughter broke her back playing on the monkey bars at the park.

My wife was in the hospital for her pregnancy twice before delivering my son. She also had a hysterectomy about a year after my son was born.

We have also had several ER visits for various reasons such as urinary tract infections and allergic reactions.

The insurance companies are losing serious money on my family.

Not sure why there is surprise at the poll results. Other than a pre-conception in need of adjustment.

Young married couples in prime child bearing years will easily reach the 2 hospitalization plateau within a ten year span.

Wasn't room to add any exclusions; I'm just trying to get at the number of unexpected and unplanned hospital admissions due to accident or illness... and I don't mean unplanned pregnancies.

The myth is that most families don't get anywhere close to satisfying their deductible and I'm trying to gauge that. Deductibles vary and some deductibles are shared by the family and some aren't.... so it's a very broad question, I know.

Still the results are surprising. I've asked this of groups before and almost never get a positive response.

Reading overnight, and excluding pregnancy related, I think we're at 2.

    Plus several non-overnight treatments.

(not sure why you're limiting this to the D&D group).

My guess is it is here because of the ObamaScare shoe that hasn't dropped.

Not all of us (55 in 2mo). ;) I've been lucky and healthy. Unless you count a real bad case of poison oak last summer.

When I answered the poll, I could just count my children. Even with these qualifiers, I still max out, though still childbirth-related. Premature twins had to spend a few nights in NICU. That's 2. Wife did a c-section, that should be worth another event (they let us stay an extra night because of it). If you count my father with heart trouble over the last 10 years... it's over.

But, I don't really see the significance. Wouldn't it be easier to ask how often you exceeded your deductible? And then, given the heterogeneity in the market, it still wouldn't mean much.

Probably more accurate to ask but more difficult to answer... going back 10 years. It also would not capture the people w/o health insurance.... NOW the thing belongs in the D&D.
