I just put my two little ones (3 and 5) to bed after an afternoon at the park, a swim and pizza with friends, so I'm in a fatherly frame of mind.

I'm also reminded that the fourth anniversary of my own father's passing is rapidly approaching, so EVERYBODY out there enjoy your dad while you have him and if you should be estranged from him do whatever is within your power and dignity to restore that relationship. You'll both be better for it.

Is that your kid? How adorable... :)

Happy Father's Day to all the dads on the bbs - and glad that you're a big part of your kids' lives. That's important.

I second what giddyup said about making the best of your time with your father while you can. I'm also in the position of not being able to call or send presents or celebrate Father's Day with my dad anymore, but I'm glad we had all the time together we did. I will always try to honor his memory; even if his time here was shorter than we thought, he taught me a lot. I find myself giving lots of advice that starts with, "As my dad always said..."

    A very cute kid!
As a Dad, thank you. :)

I keep my father "alive" for my kids (who never got to know him) by bringing him up in conversations when I can. My wife and I took my 14 year old son on a tour of MIT Friday, and I mentioned how he used to come here for different academic and business reasons. What an amazing place! I hope he can get in when the time comes. Boston is hell to drive in, btw. But I digress...

Happy Father's Day to us Dads!

Well yes, Happy Father's day indeed.

Sadly, to me a holiday that holds not much meaning. This is always a tumultuous times for such a moe, a day that brings up mixed feelings. My father frequently verbally abused my mother to the point where her self esteem was as nonexistant as his love for either of us. He resorted to a coward's way out, saying he had vested love interests elsewhere. He destroyed the memory of me altogether by burning all my baby artifacts. I never saw him again after the age of 6, I never wanted to since.
No offense to you fine fathers out there but I'd rather celebrate Jeffrey Dahmer's birthday than show respect to a man who treated a kind woman such as my mother with blatant disrespect and tried to blot out the memory of his only offspring. It's fathers day. I turn 21 today. Maybe if he was around he'd tell me some load of **** about how drunk he got with his buddies while I gave him a new electric razor during dinner at some decently priced diner. He's still out there somewhere, who knows and in my case who cares. I've lived my life to the fullest without him around.
If I ever did come face to face with him maybe I would be angry. Most likely I'd have a lot of choice words for him, mainly for my mother's sake, maybe for my own. Or maybe I'd just completely blow his mind and actually thank him. Yeah Thanks "dad" for not being around, for not showing your only son how to throw a baseball. For not taking me to the Seahawks game even though they sucked. For not taking me to the monster truck rally and driving 2 hours home while I fell asleep in the front seet with a foam finger still attached to my hand. Thanks for not showing me how to drive a stick shift, or how to make my first date not be akward. But regardless of all that, thanks "dad" for everything, you set the perfect example... of what not to do.

So Happy fathers day wherever the **** your old ass is.

    - Sincerely Yours,
    a b*stard.

moe, I think I had you in mind when I put that qualifier in there "within your power and dignity." I can't imagine being raised (or is it "not raised") like that. At least he gave you life. Lord knows the Raiders need you!

I'm sure if you ever become a father, you'll be a hell of a dad. You'll probably wear your kids out!

    Yes, Happy Father's Day all!!!!

My dad's birthday was two weeks ago, and this year I combined father's day and his birthday by purchasing him one of those fancy Sony all-in-one remote controls. I've had one for years and whenever I go to his house, I notice him fumbling through a million remote controls for the TV, DVD player, satellite dish, stereo, etc.

Ahhh, but his real father's day gift was friday and saturday, when he got to waste a total of 8 hours of his life sitting in my old apartment doing absolutely nothing while waiting for the movers to show up and move my furniture. Then, to top it off, to show my appreciation, i take my meat-lovin' father to The Hobbit Cafe for dinner last night.

Dad's sure do put up with a lot of crap!

    Love ya pops.

Yes, that is my kid. She is 10 months old so this is my first father's day. I think I enjoy fatherhood more than most. I don't think there is anything I rather do than hang out with her. Its the most rewarding and enjoyable experience of my life. My father died when I was two so this is my first fathers day of any sort and it has been good so far. :D

I took my girls (3 and 8) for bubbletea and then ice skating, then my 8 yr old and I went to a dance at chinese culture center. She wanted to dance every dance with me. :). I'm going to enjoy this while they still like me :).

I had a great Father's Day with my kids, and bittersweet one as well. As some of you know, my own father passed away just 4 months ago, so this is the first Father's Day without him. I wanted to think of him in a special way....just before he retired we began his own lawnmower repair shop in his garage. For 12 years, he worked on hundreds of lawnmowers for hundreds of satisfied customers. Today, instead of going to his grave, I went into my garage and took an old lawnmower I had and completely tore it apart. It wouldn't start before, so I decided to talk to my dad as I worked on it.

Four hours later, I had it all cleaned up and back together...and it still wouldn't start. I tried dad... :(
