This isn't a trade rumor believe me. SI said in Inside the NBA that this is probably Hakeem's last season but health permitting he could play more. And it said that if the Rockets don't want to bring him back, he would like to play for the Grizz. "I've always loved Vancouver" Olajuwon said. So the question is, if Dream wanted to play past this season, would y'all want to bring him back? I would say that we should use our picks to trade up and draft one of the high school centers, Chandler or Curry. They will have two years of seasoning under Dream and then finally take over, and it will make Cato expendable, giving us even more caproom possibly. ------------------
i think that cato will play well and will be our center of hte future. Im kind of biased because hes on of my favorite players. but he might be. I think dream will retire after this season. as much as a warrior he is i dont think he likes playing at the mediocre levl he is playing at right now.
New Guy, What issue are you talking about? That sounds a lot like something he said I think three years ago. I don't want Hakeem past this year. We should hang his jersey from the rafters now so he doesn't get any "bright" ideas about a new contract a.k.a. Ewing. Now if what you say is true, I'd do a sign and trade, but I'd leave those high school project centers alone and go out for Terrence Morris or someone as good or better. But we would be stupid to let Hakeem play here next year unless he wants a token contract. ------------------ "Liberalism not only legitimizes envy, jealousy, ignorance, and the lack of moral standards, but it also makes these attributes virtues." --Drake Raft [This message has been edited by Pass 1st, shoot 2nd (edited October 12, 2000).]
What would we gain from a sign-and-trade with Vancouver? And if we draft a 3 next year, will Mobley and Shandon be happy? It doesn't matter with Mobley we've got him for 6 years, but we only have Shandon under contract for 1 or 2. The reason Mobley and Shandon can be on the same team is because Shandon plays so many minutes at the 3, but with Morris or another 3 there, problems with playing time could start. There are 96 swingman minutes a game, so technically you could give all 3 32 minutes each, but whoever sits at the end won't be happy. Also, I got this from the newest issue of Sports Illustrated. ------------------
It's in this weeks issue, P1S2. Quote: Though this is likely to be his last season, 37-year-old Hakeem Olajuwon might play a little longer, health permitting. "I don't want the Rockets to feel obligated to keep me," he says. He wouldn't mind moving to - believe it or not - the Grizzlies. "I have loved Vancouver for a long time, says the Dream. That is all the blurb says (and I'm sure you can look it up somewhere on the SI site). It has me a little curious/concerned too. But I figure that if it was actually a recent comment, meaning that Dream was really serious about this, it would be a full article somewhere else (if not SI) and not three sentences buried between news on Michael Olowakandi's trainer and the Carter/McGrady feud. ------------------
I love the Dream, but I wouldn't bring him back next season for more than the league minimum. Still, it breaks my heart to think of him in another uniform, gulp, playing against us. ------------------ Sometimes I think I'd be better off dead. No, wait, not me...you.
Even unsigned, he would count so much against the cap that the Rockets would be handcuffed on making any kind of moves. The Mo lovers would be unhappy because there wouldn't be any free money to get in a bidding war. He probably would have to take a low salary to sign with the Griz as a free agent because they have some significant money tied up in player contracts. Vancouver would likely do a sign-n-trade if they were able to move Big Country in the process. That would not be in Houston's best interest. Mango ------------------ Test Your NBA Trade Ideas 1. Hakeem is going to have a hard enough time making it through this season with his breathing problems. ------------------ \| ||/ ô¿ô -
i think hakeem should go into commentating. he is so articulate and easy to understand. ------------------
For a little background on this from a Vancouverite. Hakeem has been known to make this comment every year as it seems that the local press always likes to get an update on this issue. I never heard anything this summer but I heard this talk again last year when he came to Vancouver and play their last game(he sat on the bench with his breathing problems). The story is that Hakeem plans on retiring in Vancouver where he has an off-season home. He has said that he would like to play one season in Vancouver before he hangs it up because he would like to give something to the community before he retires there. A way of officially joining the community. I don't see him coming here as I think he just wants to play out his last season now and retire. I think there is a more likely chance that he would be offered a big-man coaching job with the team to work with the glut of big men that the Grizz now have (mainly Swift). PPunk BTW Barkley also owns a place in Vancouver. ------------------
ok, adressing the Terrence Morris issue....I think Cuttino and Shandon WOULD be happy...why?? cause if we get terrence morris, then surely we're gonna trade walt away for ANYTHING...So it would be the same, except Langhi gets few minutes, Mobley keeps his minutes, Shandon keeps his minutes, and Terrence takes all of Walt's minutes.... btw, how tall is Morris? ------------------
Hakeem should just be part of the team but not a player give him some shares and maybe slide him to assistant coach have him part of the team make him travel with the team or put him in the head office. then if we do get a highschooler or some other big guy we'll have hakeem work with them during offtime.... ------------------ "Wahooo"-homer
Morris is 6'9'', really long arms, but weighs just 205 lbs. (going into last season I believe). He has a silky shot, and a decent post game, which would make 3 guards, Taylor-Morris sets REALLY fun. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. Follow the rules or be assimilated. Shandon is underrated.
hmm.. I hadn't heard some of this.. I know he has a huge house here in houston and he has always from what I heard talked of loving the city and living here after he retired. I knew he said vancover was a nice city but never herad anything about him actually owning a house and moving there. interesting to hear... thanks for the update from my point of view if hakeem does go play for vancover next year he is basically showing no loyalty at all to this team and city. he has played aweful the last few years and we could have traded him but kept him to be loyal so if he does leave that would be a shame. but i could see hakeem leaving if he was offered a lot of money. i see hakeem as a guy who really loves money and far from the type that would play for the minimum like charles did one year.. he's a great guy and all but i think a key reason he is playing this long is to collect every bit of the 16 mil he has coming this year ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be" [This message has been edited by Rocket Fan (edited October 14, 2000).]
Huh? The Rockets don't want Hakeem here next year, you can be sure of that. If Hakeem wants to play another year, let him have fun in a city he loves- Vancouver. I think you are waaaay off base here. In Hakeem, I see an astute business man who is obviously being advised by some pretty sharp people. Hakeem does not need another paycheck ever, imo. He is still playing because he loves to be around his teammates and contribute in a group setting. ------------------ What a slam dunk!!
I love Dream as much as the next guy but that's good stuff ------------------ I'm not the type to eat it up but the type to hit it raw dog and seed it up.
hey, just curious - does vancouver get a heavy snow every winter? i know it's off topic, but i don't know where to find any other vancouverites to ask.... ------------------
Oatdog, No, unlike the rest of Canada, it barely snows in Vancouver. It rains a heck of a lot, though. Its climate is much like Seattle's, as it's pretty cool in the summer and pretty warm in the winter. As for Dream to the Grizz, its very unlikely. If he likes the city and wants to live there, he doesn't need to play there. Like mentioned, he can work for the Grizz in some other capacity, if he really wants to 'fulfill his committment to the community'. For him to prolong his career and play in Vancouver just doesn't make sense for either party. Azim da Dream ------------------ We don't live for the destination.
