Hair loss at 21?

My hair looks like this guy below, just not painfully as obvious, lol. Where he's got the two obvious missing patches of hair, I actually have hair, but it's obvious that in those two areas that my hair is 50 times thinner than the other areas of my head.

Is there anything that actually works aside from $1000 hair transplants which I could never afford anyway? I haven't been keeping up to date with what works on the market in terms of propecia, rogaine, etc.

I subject myself to the hair loss hecklers.

im 21 and also losing hair, but before it gets to a comb over...i'm just gonna give up and shave it all off

I looked into transplants. I'm not receeding badly, but I'd rather get it started before people can tell I've done anything.

Looking at celebs like McCaughney, Affleck and Piven tell me this is the best way to go. I'd start saving now.

Basically to get it done well, expect to pay at least $4/hair.

When I was at UH, I used to play basketball against a guy that was 19 or 20 and half bald. The guy looked like he was 45.

Life can be such a lottery. Some blokes have a full head of hair until the day they die, whereas others …

"Mine started going in my early 20s," says recruitment manager Graham ruefully. (Testament to the sensitivity of this subject among blokes, he doesn’t want his real name used.) "I panicked at first and investigated a few of the options. None of them seemed quite right, or just too expensive, so I ended up doing nothing."

Graham is now in his mid-30s and what little hair he still has, he shaves off. It’s a look increasingly popular with balding men, especially younger ones. "I’ve got used to it now," he says of his "chrome dome".

"I’ve even grown to quite like it. My girlfriend likes it, too — or at least she says she does."

Like most of the workings of the body, hair is complicated stuff. These days, though, we understand most of its processes. We know alopecia (hair loss) can vary from man to man, and the general progression of MPB (male pattern baldness) can be predicted fairly accurately. Each manifestation (bald on top, thinning hair, receding hairline, what-ever), also has its own treatment. That is, if you choose to "treat" it.

"The most important thing is that people are empowered by knowledge," says Dr Bruce Fox, of the Australasian Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. "Armed with the facts, they can make the right decisions about what’s best for them."

Dr Fox says any good surgeon or hair health specialist should explain the reasons for natural hair loss to their patients or clients. Genetic codes contained within hair follicles are the most important factor in determining whether a man will lose his hair, he says, and the likely pattern of hair loss, should it occur, can also be predicted. Patients and clients should also be given a run-down of all treatments available, from herbal scalp lotions and hair pieces to surgical hair transplantation, and their pros and cons. "Of course, there are the snake-oil salesmen out there, too, promising instant cures. You need to keep your eyes open for them," says Fox.

He says that, contrary to popular belief, there are only a couple of drugs on the market which work. "And they only slow the balding process, not reverse it. Surgical transplantation has also improved exponentially recently — it’s now technically very advanced — but it’s not for everyone."

Choices, choices. Even the experts often can’t agree. "We don’t do surgery here," says Mike Beuermann, CEO of Australasian operations at Advanced Hair Studios, "for the simple reason that it doesn’t look good. It’s too obvious." He advocates, instead, one of two methods: strand by strand replacement (done gradually to replicate natural regrowth) and laser treatment.

"Laser treatment is more suitable for younger men whose hair is going into atrophy," Beuermann says. "Independent tests have found that 72 per cent of men undergoing this treatment report regrowth."

Finally, there are wigs and hairpieces available too, some of which look surprisingly realistic (hand and custom-made from real human hair). You just need to decide whether replacing an expensive hairpiece every few years is worthwhile. The most expensive "real human" hairpieces can cost a couple of thousand dollars, which is not far off what it would cost to have a hair transplant session.

There are also cheaper, mass-produced, synthetic hairpieces, but "only if you want to look like a complete dork", says Graham, shaking his shaved head. "They look shocking. I’d rather accept and live with my baldness. There’s more important things to worry about — not to mention to spend your hard-earned cash on."

Mine started falling out when I was about 20 or 21. I started noticing hair everywhere (especially filling up my cap) before I noticed anything else. Now, it's pretty thin. But I don't worry about it. I keep it relatively short and haven't had any problems. I'll cut it even shorter when it gets worse, but while I have a little to comb, I'll keep it.

If you go the "surgical" route, everyone will know. You're not a movie star, therefore you don't get movie star transplant surgeons. We will know, and we will laugh.

LOL I'm sure that will make the OP feel a LOT better. Get on Propecia. It is the most effective FDA approved hair loss drug. Rogaine isn't very effective from what I have heard.

i'm thinning like crazy and my hair recede. I cut it really short. Saves me money on getting hair cuts.

But i'm good looking so i have that to fall back on.

dude, you most likely just have a widow's peak. it's not that big of a deal. i have one. my hair isn't thinning. it's just shaped like that. i don't think it's receded much since.
