I've decided to grow a beard. Can anyone offer advice on following?: 1) Grooming - Because I'm pretty much bald on top, I've had my barbers keep my hair at a 1.5 length. I don't want my beard to be much longer than this, but I also don't want to double the price of my haircut just to keep my beard trim. So I figure its time to buy my own clippers. What would be the best type/brand of clipper to buy that can handle both head and facial hair? 2) Softening - How do you keep your beard from feeling like a million pine needles have been shoved into your pores? Conditioner? Thanks in advance...

I have a Norelco T770 beard trimmer that I use...it works great on facial hair and only costs around $25...I wouldn't use the same trimmer for both you hair and your facial hair, though...
I've had a beard for most of the last decade. I got a pair of Wahl clippers at Target or some such place and run them through the beard with the 1 1/2 inch guard every weekend to keep it trimmed. I just shampoo my beard like I do my hair everytime I shower... I wouldn't wait to grow it as someone suggested. The itchy phase is when it is just laying on your face. The hot weather makes that worse. So get those follicles moving NOW and you'll be glad you did....
still have my beard from above mentioned thread bought myself some clippers and getting pretty good at managing my very sweet beard the mrs is still not completely sure about but i like it
man... chill. it's not like he's growing a beard on "deez nuts" or something. "stop posting immediately." anyway, sub... not really any tips on cl1pp3rz (wow... "clippers" looks pretty cool that way! i am so hip! ... not really) or how to condition or anything, but here's the deal... ... the scraggly look is pretty cool looking and "in" i guess. doesn't matter that you're bald on top. just grow the beard no more than a centimeter long and don't do the pansy thing by trimming along the jaw line (looks too queer). keep that mofo growing down the your neck. i can't over emphasize the length of the beard... centimeter at most. after that, get your self some pumas or diesels, wranglers, a white tee, the ol'skool 'didas jacket and you'll be all set.
The itch only lasts a few days until the beard reaches a certain length. Skin lotion with moisturizer cools it off and soothes it so it doesn't drive you nuts. Pretty much any trimmer you can get at Target will do the job of keeping it neat.
My wife liked the facial hair. It enhanced certain things. Sadly for her, I work for an investment bank that has an unwritten policy against beards and goatees. I actually used conditioner on the beard. Made it nice and soft. Kiehls.
