Grant Hill has informed the Orlando Magic of his intent to sign a free agent deal with the Phoenix Suns. Is this yet another move the Suns have erred in? It really seems to me that he will have a very hard time in their system. Much like Jim Jackson, I just don't know if he'll have the foot speed to keep up. I also can't imagine that the style would be good for his injuries. When I think of Grant anymore, I would think a more half-court pace would be ideal. link
does this mean they are going to get rid of marion? s.a. sports radio has been all over hill this week - they thought he was going to sign there - i do think he would have been a better fit in s.a., but i am glad that those smug spurs fans wont be getting him. i think if he is playing a smaller role (20 minutes/game) he will be fine.
I they do get rid of Marion and lean of Grant heavily, it will be great for the rest of the West. I agree about S.A. too, he would have been a better fit, but he just doesn't have the heart that Malik Rose has so it's all for the best.
You guys act as if Phoenix runs a fast break on every possession. Steve Nash is the best point guard in half court sets AND on the break. Nash also doesn't need Hill to run a good fast break. He still has plenty of guys to fill up the lane. Plus, I think Hill will play some point forward when Nash is taking a breather.
When Pho is at their best, they are a track team that causes mismatches at almost every position. Because of that, players like Jalen Rose and Jim Jackson have had problems fitting in. At this stage of his career, I don't see much of a difference between Jalen and Grant.
Didn't he tell the media before that he was going to stick with the Magic since he basically "owed" them for all the injuries he's had over the years? I hereby award Grant Hill -1 rep points. Sure, he's still a classy guy overall, but now, he's just a little less classy (IMO).
Didn't they trade James Jones for cash or something like that. I think the Suns needed someone to pick up those minutes. Hill is fine in their system...I remember when the Spurs shut down Nash in crunch time in the losses, the Suns couldn't have anyone else create consistently enough. Hill has good handles and great vision...his offensive package is way more complete than Jim Jackson or Jalen Rose...and Jackson was huge in the playoffs 3 years ago vs the Mavs.
After all these agnoizing years for the Magic, finally it gets the peace of mind knowing for certain whether Hill's there for them all not.
great value for phoenix. Although I wonder if Grant Hill has talked to Jalen Rose about how many mins older vets get to play in their system.
OMG this is nuts I hope Morey tried hard to get Grant Hill on board.. 2 Years for 3.8 Million? Wow!!!!! What a steal....
yeah i thought so too that is terrible...i remember he tried playing in the minimum # of games possible each of his injured season so he would get his full salary and the magic could not claim a medical exception on him. if a guy has ever brought a franchise down it would be hill, the only notable thing he did in orlando is force tracy mcgrady to become tmac by not playing i still have a lot of respect for grant hill the player, grant hill the person i dont
Don't forget that when healthy Grant Hill has more talent than those two guys put together. Jalen Rose is ready for the glue factory while Hill can still play. At the vet minimum, this is a great move for Phoenix. There is no downside. This explains why the Suns gave away James Jones.
The Suns don't always transition at full speed. Grant Hill basically was the Magics' transition O. Enough so that he even made Francis and Mobley adequate in transition. Hill will be fine. But (unless it was being paid by an insurance or medical policy) I do think it would have been classier to have given ORL some production back for the big bucks they paid him during his long recoveries.
We let Kenny Smith walk before '96/97 and we probably wouldnt have won the title in '95 without him. What's your point? Teams make changes all the time to make way for younger players. That doesn't erase the production the player in question contributed for them in the past.
I hope the Suns don't wise up and sign Brevin Knight. Then they'd finally have a true back-up pg. Keep bringing in old guys like Grant and Jalen, Phoenix. That's the ticket.
my point is that jim sucked for Phoenix. His PPG declined 5pts in his first half season and an additional 2 for the first half of his second season with them at which time he was moved. \ Boobie Gibson looked good in the playoffs, but chances are he won't be worth a damn. Bonzi was great against SA and pathetic last year. My points is this, slower aging vets don't do well on this Phoenix team. It is all about athleticism and mismatches.
