I just got home from work and watched my TiVo'd copy of "Pardon the Interruption." They did "Five Good Minutes" with Charles Barkley. At the end of the segment, the Chuckster dropped a real bombshell. He said that he voted for John Kerry and that if Kerry lost, he would run for governor of Alabama. After coming back from commercial, both Wilbon and TK said he was dead serious and they spent a few minutes talking about it.
Doesn't he say that every year or so? I would say that could never happen but then I look at the Governor of Cali...
Us Alabamians have heard this for a while; he keeps on saying it and could potentially run a successful campaign; he's popular, well-known, (mostly) well-liked around the country, and he's a hell of a lot better than the past two governors. Former Gov. Don Siegelman was being charged for health care fraud in May, although it seems baseless. And current Gov. Bob Riley is an extreme conservative -- he won't bother to consider an education-based lottery or the revision of the country's oldest state constitution in great need of reform based on his 'morals.' Barkley could turn heads if he runs on improving education funds for the state.
Lookin like Barkley should be running in a few years if he sicks with what he said on PTI. Id hate to see NBA coverage and like Wilbon said he might lose some of his outspoken nature by geting into politics.
Charles would be a fun governor. Would he run as republican as he always said or would he run as a democrate? Mark
Barkley was informed yesterday that Alabama is one of the States that require you to live there to run for governor.
then he said he certainly couldn't make it any worse, but not in a they are in a bad way way; more in a Bama pretty much sucks way /don't bank on it
I've always wondered if a very popular actor, singer or sports hero like maybe Jack Nicholson or Michael Jordan just said f*** it and ran as an indpendent for President if they would stand a chance. I mean there are thousands of people a year who write in Mickey Mouse and Doanld Duck so why not? I'll go out on a limb and say they'd pick up more votes than Perot did and maybe carry a state or two.
He's not going to win. He's not a smart book-worm type. He's a smart talker, but not a smart man. He can't even get MONEY from Jeopardy... check out the score... I swear, I didn't DOCTOR this image... And he wants to run for GOVERNOR?????
I think Barkley would have a shot, but the simple revelation that he voted for Kerry would be his doom in most of the state. Besides, I think he lacks the cognitive capacity to lead a state govt. He's impulsive, ill-tempered and would need to be able to work the state legislature, which in Alabama is one of the most entrenched old-boys' networks in all of Christendom. If I still lived in the AL, I certainly would not vote for him, even though I wrote him in the last Alabama governor's race I voted in.
Everything else you said may be right, Chuck may not be able to push the right buttons to ingratiate himself to the old boys network (OBN), which is a shame. Because you're dead wrong about his intelligence. Barkley's an extremely intelligent, witty, verbose, critically-thinking individual who's not afraid to say what he thinks and who truly cares (I think) about Alabama, a state that most would have disassociated themselves with long ago.
Exactly. How can you claim to be a Republican, but yet vote for SKerry? I just don't see him winning political office. I still have love for the time he body-slammed Shaq (no small feat), but does that mean he should be governor of Alabama? No.
So Republicans should vote a straight ticket every time? Whatever happened to voting your conscience?
Let's not take this to the D & D, where thanks to a bit of gloating, I can no longer tread. Barkley is not the kind of man who needs to hold political office. He's great on the halftime show and almost makes watching any other NBA besides the Rox enjoyable. But would I want him as the ambassador of the state of Alabama if I still lived there? Absolutely not.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF****!!!!!! Sorry, just read an article in the Crimson White (U of Alabama's newspaper for those unknowning) that Tom Parker was elected to the Alabama Supreme Court. He's a legal aide of and could possibly help a push for the Governor's race for... ROY MOORE. If that occurs, then I will start to live by the terrible stereotypes that Alabama is a backwards, ****ed up area. Sounds like I'm overreacting because the possibility (hopefully not the reality) is still 2 years away? I think not. The support for such a stubborn god awful ******* in this state is ridiculous. My god the thought of that happening is worse than hell. If he did run (which I truly don't doubt), then I imagine the only person strong enough to defeat such a monster is Sir Charles. I really don't even want to imagine that; it seriously makes me sick. Can anyone imagine the type of things he would do as governor?!?! Here's the article if anyone cared.
