Did anyone hear Gore's tirade, er, speech yesterday? The guy has lost it. I would hope a few of you liberals could at least admit to that. I thank God he didn't become our president and you Bush haters can say what you want, but Gore is just plain nuts. And the fact that he's in bed with the Moveon.org folks is scary enough. They are the same people who compared Bush to Hitler. You can see and hear the speech here: http://www.c-span.org/homepage.asp You can read it here, but I think you need to hear it to get the full impact: http://www.moveonpac.org/goreremarks052604.html/
Move On did not compare Bush to Hitler. Someone submitted a video to their Ad contest that compared Bush to Hitler. Attributing the ad to Move On would be like saying Clutchfans.com compared all Arabs to savage animals because a someone on this BBS posted it. So, were you just misinformed about this incident, or were you intentionally misleading people?
Except that MoveOn asserts far more editorial control than clutchfans does. MoveOn purports to be an informational, news website. clutchfans is a fan website with a section specifically designed for fan feedback.
How do you know you weren't misinformed? Moveon.org also as an ad with a prison hood over the statue of liberty.
Faos, I heartily disagree. Anyone with half a brain who has read a newspaper over the past three months knows the truth: Bush and his neocon cronies have "lost it". They will "lose it" again in November. If Gore were President, we would still have the respect of the rest of the world, for starters. Name one thing from Gore's speech that was inaccurate. And, Gifford is correct, MoveOn did not compare Junior to Hitler. You really need to do a little more research than just listening to Rush the Hillbilly Heroin junkie.
An accurate analogy, for those without blinders on. And guess who put the hood on the statue of liberty? That's right, your buddy, the pResident. Don't like it? Lump it!
Max, anyone could submit an ad. Moveon did not create it or endorse it. I think my analogy is pretty accurate. Here's MoveOn's press release on the issue- Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 ADS ATTACKED BY RNC CHAIRMAN ARE NOT MOVEON.ORG VOTER FUND ADS MoveOn.org Voter Fund Regrets Screening Process Allowed Ads to Slip Through Statement by Wes Boyd, Founder of MoveOn.org Voter Fund: The Republican National Committee and its chairman have falsely accused MoveOn.org of sponsoring ads on its website which compare President Bush to Adolf Hitler. The claim is deliberately and maliciously misleading. During December the MoveOn.org Voter Fund invited members of the public to submit ads that purported to tell the truth about the President and his policies. More than 1,500 submissions from ordinary Americans came in and were posted on a web site, bushin30seconds.org, for the public to review. None of these was our ad, nor did their appearance constitute endorsement or sponsorship by MoveOn.org Voter Fund. They will not appear on TV. We do not support the sentiment expressed in the two Hitler submissions. They were voted down by our members and the public, who reviewed the ads and submitted nearly 3 million critiques in the process of choosing the 15 finalist entries. We agree that the two ads in question were in poor taste and deeply regret that they slipped through our screening process. In the future, if we publish or broadcast raw material, we will create a more effective filtering system. Contrast this with the behavior of the RNC and its allies when supporters of President Bush used TV ads morphing the face of Sen. Max Cleland (D-GA) into that of Osama Bin Laden during the 2002 Senate race. MoveOn.org and the MoveOn.org Voter Fund exist to bring the public into the political process and produce a more fact-based election process. We regret that the RNC doesn’t seem to embrace the same goals.
Gore is a different man when he's not a candidate. That speech is only one of several that have hit the nail on the head. If Gore had been this person during the 2000 campaign he would have won. But Gore the candidate tries to be what he thinks people want him to be. During his speech, in which he called for the resignation of a number of top Bush aides, the audience was going crazy. There was continuous applause, and I was applauding just watching it from my home.
What else would you expect from that audience? And the call for the resignation of those aides is moronic. I lived in Tennessee when Gore was a senator there. He's an ass.
Gore's audiences during his campaign run were nowhere near as enthusiastic. Calling for the resignation of those aides, was a call for someone to take some responsibility for all the things that have gone wrong. I thought taking personal responsibility was a favorite call of conservatives.
Gore just strikes me as creepy. Whether he's mouthing the lockbox words or growing a professorial beard or ranting and raving...i just find nothing about him that's approachable or real. I pretty much feel that same way about Kerry. Definitely didn't feel that way about Bush or Clinton. At the very least, those guys strike me as real people. Much easier to connect with them.
If mainstream Democrats keep this up, the party might get more than my tepid support. This was a particularly well reasoned section from Gore's speech- There is good and evil in every person. And what makes the United States special in the history of nations is our commitment to the rule of law and our carefully constructed system of checks and balances. Our natural distrust of concentrated power and our devotion to openness and democracy are what have lead us as a people to consistently choose good over evil in our collective aspirations more than the people any other nation. Our founders were insightful students of human nature. They feared the abuse of power because they understood that every human being has not only "better angels" in his nature, but also an innate vulnerability to temptation - especially the temptation to abuse power over others. Our founders understood full well that a system of checks and balances is needed in our constitution because every human being lives with an internal system of checks and balances that cannot be relied upon to produce virtue if they are allowed to attain an unhealthy degree of power over their fellow citizens. Listen then to the balance of internal impulses described by specialist Charles Graner when confronted by one of his colleagues, Specialist Joseph M. Darby, who later became a courageous whistleblower. When Darby asked him to explain his actions documented in the photos, Graner replied: "The Christian in me says it's wrong, but the Corrections Officer says, 'I love to make a [edit] grown man piss on himself." What happened at the prison, it is now clear, was not the result of random acts by "a few bad apples," it was the natural consequence of the Bush Administration policy that has dismantled those wise constraints and has made war on America's checks and balances. The abuse of the prisoners at Abu Ghraib flowed directly from the abuse of the truth that characterized the Administration's march to war and the abuse of the trust that had been placed in President Bush by the American people in the aftermath of September 11th.
So far you have misrepresented MoveOn with a factually inaccurate statement, called Gore "moronic" "nuts" and an "ass", yet have not provided anything to back up these statements. You would be taken more seriously if you supported your positions with something more than name calling.
I've met the guy on a couple of occasions back in the late 80's, early 90's. I know people who have dealt with him in the past. He is an ass. I used to love when he was running for vp and later president and used to play up his country boy Tennessee roots knowing that the guy spent most of his childhood and adult life in DC.
