i like mooch. he's a fan favorite. however, against a zone defense, he's not the backup i want.

give me mahmoud. i believe his contract with vancouver is up this season.

he's the perfect backup for francis. he's quick as hell, he's a decent passer, and he has a gr8 midrange jumper. against a zone, he'd be much more effective than the mooch. it also helps that he's my favorite college player of all time.

Actually, Moochie will be perfect against the zone. I dont know what you are talking about. Moochie can penetrate, he is a pin point passer, and he can hit the midrange shot. Mahmoud is no longer quick, has below average ball handling skills for a point gaurd, and he is no longer able to shoot at the level he shot about 5 years ago.

    rezdawg,

i'm not anti-mooch. i like him. i just so happen to think that mahmoud would do a better job next year.

defense is a wash between the two.
i'd agree that mooch is a better passer. i'd agree that mooch is a better ball handler.

however, i don't think you can say that mooch is a better midrange and long range shooter - 2 assets that are crucial to beating a zone from a guard's perspective. in other words i'd take the benefit of mahmoud's shooting ability over moochie's passing and ball handling. the difference between the two is not that great (regarding passing and ball handling). however, i think that there IS a large difference in their shooting ability.

keep in mind, of course, that we're talking about only 10 minutes per game. but i'd take abdul-rauf. think about it. what does mooch do - typically - when in the game? iso. drive and - more often that not - hit the layup. that's great. but i don't think that will be the case next year.

Most zone defense experts agree that the two most valuable assets against zone defenses are shooters and point guards who can drive and dish. Moochie can do both. Bring back the FRO!

Mahmood over Moochie? LOL! Mahmood is talented, but the age factor alone rules him out in my book. Also the chemistry Moochie has with this team can not be duplicated easily.

    We want Moochie!!

Moochie is the best pure point guard we've got. No matter how much Steve and the Rockets want, Steve is more of a 2 guard than point. He spent an awful lot of time playing that position this year. Mooch will be back providing he doesn't get a big dollar offer from elsewhere.

HELLO, slashers and penetrators are much better against zones then shooters.

    That is funny moestavern!!!

You guys amaze me, Mahmood (or however it is spelled), has one good game last year, and it happened to be against the Rockets towards the end, and you guys are ready to sign him up. Heck, he hardly could get off the bench for a team as bad as Vancouver, and you guys want him. Get real.....
Mooch is exactly what this team needs off the bench, not to mention he has a great relationship with the team, is a team player. Stop all the nonsense....

I think Moochie is a far better fit with this team. Besides, I doubt most teams will be spending most of their time in a true zone, they'll probably just collapse inside more.

Not to sound cocky, but I don't think the Mooch Man necessarily wants to play with another team. And I think Mooch is the Rocket's top back-up point guard prospect. He wants to be a Rocket, the Rockets want him. Why even consider someone else?

    From the Chronicle:

Norris so completely found a niche, the Rockets consider bringing him back a free-agency priority.

Moochie will be back because he is one of the best backups in the nba. And there is no gaurantee that nba teams are going to use a lot of zone because of the defensive 3-second.

Yeah, he is a great pin point passer!!! How does he dribble for 20 seconds and throw the ball back out at the 3 point line. He makes Kidd and even Avery Johson look like CBA talent.

How could you compare Mahmoud's ball handling skills to Moochie. When moochie dribbles in circles, it leaves his defenders scratching their heads wondering WHAT THE HELL HE IS DOING!!!!

I can't believe I am reading these posts! Ship the Little Dribbler and his inflated contract at first opportunity. A perfect fit? The best point guard we have? A pin point passer? He is a vintage MINOR LEAGUER. One of the organization's big mistakes along with Rice and Cato. Sorry Jeff, I love you and all you have done for Rocket's fans, but I disagree on this one (probably for the first time). Nevertheless, you rock!
