    Hey all,

Does anyone know of a good and dependable host on the net? I'm talking both good prices and service. I know DoD gave me a link, but I can't quite remember what it was.

Also, is there anywhere where I can get cheap domain name registration?

I like HostRocket.com. They are reliable, and they have plans as low as $9.95.

As for cheap domain registration, there are companies like 000Domains.com that charge $13.50 per year, and they are a good and easy to use company. Registerfly.com offers domains for $9.99 per year, but I don't know how good a company they are.

Ace I was looking for a cheap reliable host also. I found http://doteasy.com. You pay $25 to register your .com .net or .org and they will host your site for free. They'll give you unlimited e-mail and 20 megs of space. Make sure you have a ftp program that you know how to use because they don't offer an upload page. If you want to know how fast it is go to http://www.kb8.net because that's who they use.

I submitted my site, <a href="http://www.geocities.com/cuttino_mobley/index.htm">Cuttino Mobley Online</a>, myself, daily. And I love the results. I am now listed under google.com, yahoo.com, mamma.com, aol search, compuserce search, netscape search, and search.com all within the first few sites listed (that's only what I know of). But if you are looking to submit Space Center it might be a little harder to get a "good spot" in the search results.

PS Ace check the poll on Space Center because it says it's a wrong link.

Hurricane Electric is getting a lot of new high praise. I have friends who swear by them. Their backbone is right in San Jose, fastest around. There is not beating their price.

When looking for a host, don't forget to keep in mind the needs you have - ASP, CGI, Cold Fusion, etc. Many hosts don't offer those options.

    www.addr.com

They're a web hosting company that you can also register your domain name with. I'm using their services at the moment and have had no problems. I would recommend them. The Microsoft Front Page extensions that they offer are also very convenient and efficient.

I've had great service from webpipe.net

CGI (perl and python), PHP, MySQL, 50 megs of space, SSL and one gig of traffic per month for $13.

Basically, a shell account on your choice of Linux or FreeBSD.

As a developer I have come to depend on my host..
    http://www.aitcom.net

They have a partnership with nameit.net where you can get a package deal on hosting and domain registration. I have never experienced any down time, and their tech support is second to none.

    Ace,

The hosting service I talked to you about was ReadyHosting.com. It's $99/year and has Cold Fusion, SQL Server, Access, ASP, 500 MB space, unlimited bandwidth, etc, etc.

damn DoD, that's a lot of hd space and unmetered bandwidth. Is that true--no bandwidth charges? I'm not much for those NT systems, though; they don't have sendmail. For instance, this bbs couldn't run there since it relies on sendmail.

    Ace,

DoD's has a better price for HD space than www.he.com , if you don't need Unix/Linux. Hurricane's big claim to fame in these lowprice-class hosts is speed. They are in the same building as Mae West.

That's not even the best deal on the 'Net. The best deals I've ever been able to find are at www.cihost.com. Unlimited everything just about and 1 or 2 GB of HD space for about $30/month the last time I looked. They have both Unix and NT. What they give you for the price is ridiculous. Look for their "specials" on Unix and NT. They never expire, so don't think their little countdown ticker is forcing you to buy. The only reason I don't recommend them is that I've been hearing about terrible customer support from them lately. But if you're willing to gamble with www.cihost.com :

    Unix Special : http://www.cihost.com/?zone=products/shared_unix_hosting_specials

    NT Special : http://www.cihost.com/?zone=products/shared_nt_hosting_specials

I've heard the exact opposite about www.readyhosting.com. Plus their setup is instantaneous which is pretty cool and they pay for your domain name registration or wave setup fees if you transfer a domain. By the way, I goofed on the www.readyhosting.com pricing. It's $99/year, not $9.99/month so it's even more of a great deal.

the first thing that comes to mind is you can't run a UBB board like this fine BBS on NT because it requires sendmail.

Ace, you can do any database work you want on NT. If you do stuff from scratch, you will be just fine. If you are going to roll out freeware or open source packages, you probably are going to want Linux. I am not current on this, though. Generally speaking, most free stuff is for apache, MySQL and Linux systems (out of the box, at least).

    Ace,

Make sure you ask them for pricing on everything. A lot of these companies will have their pretty little charts and have "yes"es everywhere. What they don't tell you is that yeah, they support all that, but it'll cost you more to get it. Other things to watch out for are databases if you're looking into them. Some will say they support SQL Server or mySQL databases, but they never tell you if there's an additional setup fee or if there's an additional per month cost. They also don't tell you how much space you get for the database.

BTW, I did a brief search on www.deja.com for hostrocket.com and turned up some people that were happy with their service.

Do yourself a favor... join the darkside... learn ASP, SQL Server, and become one with Microsoft... [IMG]

As for your earlier question about what you'd lose choosing NT over Unix. Here's a better way to think about it :

If you're just going to put up your standard website with multiple pages and what-not, either of them will probably do. If you start going into things like running a BBS, or creating data-driver pages with database backends, you need to first find out what tools you want to learn to use or already know how to use. If you want to learn dynamic web page creation with SQL Server, MS Access, ASP, Frontpage, etc., your best bet is to go with an NT box. If you're comfortable with Unix shell accounts, mySQL, PHP, etc. you're better off with a Unix box.

But first find out what you want to do.
Then find out how you can do it.
Then find out what tools you'll need to do it.
Then find out what tools you'd prefer using.
Lastly find out which platform, NT or Unix, supports those tools.

I personally preferred NT simply because my work environment is Winblowz-based so I thought I could learn and have fun at the same time by getting an NT hosting service.
