One of the best freeware ones you can get is SuperAntiSpyware (yes, the name is cheesy). Their pro version does more, and more importantly, updates itself. With the free version, you have to remember to update it yourself.

Another very good one is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. This is probably the best free one out there (it may actually be the best, period, in many cases) :

The problem with the free versions of these is that all (or any) of their protection features may not be enabled, but they should be able to remove/detect malware.

Outside of those two, try Spybot Search & Destroy.

Btw, I'd have more than one handy.

Stay away from Lavasoft's AdAware. It's a bloated program that isn't as good as the above 3 yet gets recommended due to it being one of the more famous original freebies.

This!! Malwarebytes got rid of stuff Norton, McAfee, NOD32 didn't even detect.

Second this statement, I used to be really into Lavasoft products -but they have become extremely bloated and slow (AdAware being the worst offender).

Agreed, SAS and Malwarebytes are the best. A-squared Anti-Malware from Emsi is also very good.
