An article in today's Houston Chronicle

I read this in today's paper and though I'm an atheist, I thought it might be good food for thought. I really like how the author notes that including God in catch-phrases and celebration for trivial events (for example, watch the next music/movie/sport award event - you'd think God was in the entertainment business) seems cheap and tacky.

The only thing I'm not totally convinced that our "War on Terror" is a war with militant Islam. Rather, I see militant Islam as a tool of motivation and deception used by those who wish to attain or keep power. So our war should be against the greed for power and also ignorance, because I think a better educated population would be less accepting of religious-based intolerance (in Islam or any faith). Maybe that's what the author is asking for - a more educated understanding of God

I agree with that. Consistency is a big thing for me. I gave God the credit for convicting my heart to attend church and worship while I was doing that.

Now that I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to do either of those two things, I'm afraid God's going to have to take the collar for that one, too.

I'd tolerate writing like this from a college student still wrestling with the nature of evil and the caprice of fate. But, I'd think a senior fellow in a think-tank would be old enough to make it beyond this point in his contemplations of the immortal.
